OSWEGO – Otto Sitterly recorded his 49th career Novelis Supermodified feature victory Saturday night on Cutro Professional Inspections Autograph Night at Oswego Speedway, doing so in dominant fashion. Starting 12th, Sitterly methodically worked his way through the field before pulling away to win by over a full straightaway ahead of Dave Shullick Jr. Josh Sokolic completed the podium.
The 50-lap feature was led to green by heat race winner Jack Patrick, who had turned 16.5-second laps earlier in the evening, alongside Sokolic. Sokolic got the jump at the start while fourth-starting Nick Snyder continued to impress, moving into third ahead of Lou LeVea Jr. and then setting his sights on Patrick.
Early on, the top five consisted of Sokolic, Patrick, Snyder, LeVea Jr., and Brandon Bellinger, who had started sixth.
It took only 10 laps for Sitterly to be in the mix for the top five positions. With Sokolic and Patrick well out in front, Snyder, LeVea Jr., Dave Danzer, Bellinger, and Sitterly ran nose-to-tail in a spirited battle for third through seventh.
The yellow flag flew on lap 11 when Bellinger and Danzer came together battling for fifth. Bellinger got sideways and made a tremendous save, but both cars were forced to pit. Snyder had a bad break and also headed pit side with a broken torque arm on the No. 0.
The new running order was now Sokolic, Patrick, LeVea Jr., Sitterly, and Abold, but Shullick quickly dove to the inside and cracked the top five after starting 11th.
Next, Sitterly moved underneath LeVea Jr. and took over third as the field came around to complete lap 12, putting himself on the podium. However, the yellow flag flew again when Abold and Michael Muldoon came together battling for sixth entering turn three. Logan Rayvals, who had been running eighth, was also collected, with heavy damage sustained by the No. 94, No. 15, No. 05, and the No. 99 of Dave Cliff, who was driving the Jerry Curran machine.
Still with only 12 laps complete, it was Sokolic, Patrick, LeVea Jr., Sitterly, and Shullick making up the top five.
On the restart, Sokolic pulled away from Patrick, who was left to fend off challenges from LeVea Jr. As the field completed lap 13, Patrick and LeVea Jr. were side-by-side for second when Patrick suffered a front-end mechanical failure. Patrick made a fantastic save entering turn one but was eventually forced pit side.
Meanwhile, Sitterly rocketed around the outside of LeVea Jr. and into second as the field completed lap 14 and immediately began chasing down Sokolic. Shullick, who had started 11th, was next to get by LeVea Jr. and move into third.
At the same time, Tyler Thompson had cracked the top five from his 14th starting position, while Junior Farrelly, starting 13th, was enjoying the best run of his career and 15th-starting Camden Proud had worked his way into sixth and seventh respectively.
Sitterly drove by Sokolic for the lead as the field completed lap 17, and from there it was smooth sailing for the driver from Canajoharie in the Nicotra Racing No. 7. Shullick made a great move on lap 19, slingshotting underneath Sokolic for second, but he had nothing for Sitterly.
Mastering both lapped traffic and the competition, Sitterly cruised to his 49th career Novelis Supermodified feature victory. Shullick finished second followed by Sokolic. LeVea Jr. turned in a strong fourth-place run, while Thompson rounded out the top five. Farrelly recorded the best finish of his career in sixth, Proud came home seventh, Bellinger rebounded to finish eighth, Bob Reis marked his first Supermodified start in 12 years with a ninth-place finish, and Danzer completed the top ten.
“In victory lane, Sitterly said, “Didn’t start on the pole this week, but it was a good car, definitely a hot rod. There’s going to be a couple of these coming out of the Hawk shop pretty soon with Tyler Thompson getting one and Mike Bruce too, but I’ve definitely got to thank Johnny Nicotra and I can’t say enough about the car. I’ve got to thank Dennis Level also. He built this motor. This was intended for the wing car and we ended up selling the car and just doing our deal here, but shoutout to those guys. It seemed to be real good. I’ve got to thank Royal Purple, Corr/Pak Merchandising, Onyx Hose & Tube, Five Brothers Produce, Flip Electronics, and again to Johnny Nicotra for all the money he gets gathered up for us.”
The Novelis Supermodified championship chase continues in two weeks during the Independence Spectacular presented by Burke’s Do It Best Home Centers of Oswego and Fulton, featuring a 50-lap main event for the Supermodifieds on our country’s 250th Independence Day, Saturday, July 4.
