Oz Roller Girls Announce 2012 Home Schedule

OSWEGO — The Oz Roller Girls recently announced their five-date home schedule, hoping to keep the success rolling after a 10-2 record in their debut season.

Recently attaining A team status including a January 204-162 road victory over the Albany All-Stars A Team, the more experienced flat-track roller derby league has booked an even tougher schedule for its second season.

The home season will open March 10, in the Oswego YMCA Armory against the Kingston Derby Girls’ Skateful Dead squad. The bout, titled “Blizzard of Oz,” marks the first international competition for Oz. A portion of proceeds will support Move Along Inc.

Oz hosts the Albany All-Stars A Team in a rematch on May 5, in Oswego’s Crisafulli Ice Rink. Titled “Cinco de Mayhem,” the bout will look to follow up on the tight, hard-hitting bout between the two teams that opened the season. A portion of proceeds will support the local branch of the American Red Cross.

The Burlington Bombers from Vermont will invade the Crisafulli Ice Rink on June 2, for a zombie-themed bout titled “Dawn of the Derby.” Part of the proceeds will benefit Oswego YMCA scholarships.

The Oz Roller Girls will revisit the 1970s during the “Highway to Hurt” bout on Aug. 18 in Crisafulli Ice Rink, facing an opponent to be determined. The Oswego County SPCA will receive a portion of proceeds.

Oz will wrap its home season with a superhero-themed bout, “Star Pass of Doom,” vs. Assault City Roller Derby’s Assault Squad A Team on Sept. 15. Part of the proceeds will support Suicide Awareness Voices of Education.

Season tickets cost $55 for trackside seating, $40 for general admission.

On a per-bout basis, tickets cost $15 for trackside, $10 for general admission and $5 for children ages 4 to 12.

The exception is the Blizzard of Oz bout for which only the $10 adult and $5 children’s ticket costs apply, although due to limited seating for that match, visitors are encouraged to bring their own chairs.
