7 Crowned at Quarter Midget Classic

The Oswego County Quarter Midget Club held its annual Classic event Saturday afternoon at “Claytona’s” 1/20-mile track, located at the corners of Howard and Silk Roads in Volney. Beautiful weather greeted all in attendance as seven race winners were crowned in their respective classes.

The first race on the schedule was the largest – the 40-lap, 10-car Sr. Honda event. Camden Proud nabbed the early lead from the pole position, bringing Zach Sobotka, Kyle Perry and Amylynn Holland across the stripe with him to complete the maiden lap.

Proud and  Sobotka broke away early, but were soon joined by Holland as the trio approached lapped traffic. In doing so, Sobotka snuck underneath Proud to take the lead. Holland followed into second after minor contact with the former race leader. Sobotka took advantage of the contact behind him, stretching out his lead.

Sobotka was holding a full straightaway advantage over Holland when the caution flag flew for Daniel Dorr’s car just past the halfway mark.

Sobotka would lead Holland, Proud, PK White and Kyle Perry back to the green. Initially, Sobotka was able to hold his ground on the restart, but an inside move off of turn No. 2 by Holland put her in the lead.

A caution on the final lap allowed Sobotka a chance to reclaim the lead on the restart, but it was Holland’s race. Amylynn cruised the final lap en route to the win.

Up next, were the Jr. Novice drivers. They took to the track for their 25-lap main event. A pre-race warm-up saw Dalton Megnin and Eymarah Bowman tangle off of turn No. 4, resulting in Megnin clocking the outside wall fairly hard. However, after a quick look-over, both resilient machines (and drivers) were good to go and racing got under way.

Freddy Nolan assumed command early, as Bowman quickly jumped from last to second. After a few trips around to gauge the competition, Bowman snuck underneath Nolan in turn No. 3 to earn the lead. A few laps later, Bowman had checked-out, taking the checkered flag.

A small, but competitive field took the green flag for the Sr. Novice Classic event. Rich Elston took command early, leading the first half of the race. However, with a little contact, Payton Gorman worked his way underneath the race leader, taking the top spot away. From that point on, it was all Gorman.

Addison Bowman completely dominated the Jr. Honda division Classic. The regular season track champ darted from last to first at the drop of the green. Having vaulted ahead of the field early, Bowman continued to run away, taking the checkered flag in the 20-lap race.

Following the Jr. Honda race, the Heavy Honda’s took to the track for their 40-lapper. Jordan Delucia took the early lead, but Bailey Groves filed in closely behind. Groves stalked the race leader for nearly a dozen laps before making a beautiful sling-shot move to the inside to take the lead away.

Brett Draper worked his way into second and set sail for Groves. However, the advantage Groves had built was simply too much to overcome. She cruised into victory lane with the win.

Zach Sobotka took the lead in the highly contested Light 160 Classic event. Searching for her second win on the day, Amylynn Holland filed into second, behind Sobotka. About five laps in, a fierce battle for second between Ryan Dolbear, Holland and Addison Bowman sent Bowman spinning on the back straightaway.

After another quick caution shortly after the restart, Sobotka brought Dolbear, Holland, Daniel Dorr and Camden Proud back to racing.

A tremendous battle for the lead erupted on the restart. Dolbear darted under Sobotka for the top spot in turn No. 2. Holland entered the picture, getting around both Sobotka and Dolbear. The trio continued to swap positions for the lead until Dolbear was finally able to take control.

However, in the midst of the continuous battle for second, Camden Proud flipped his quarter midget racer in turn No. 2. The field was given the red flag, but after a quick check-up, both Proud and his car were cleared to return. Proud made a valiant charge from the back of the pack in a wounded car to come away with a respectable finish

Dolbear would hang on for the win.

The final race of the afternoon saw Allison Boyzuck take the early lead in the Heavy 160 40-lapper. However, Bailey Groves darted underneath everyone to assume command a lap later.

Shortly after Groves had taken the lead, the red flag flew after Brett Draper got crossed-up on the back straightaway. He hammered the outside wall and after catching a bit of air time, coasted to a stop on the infield grass. A banged-up right arm sidelined him for the rest of the race.

On the restart, Groves picked up where she’d left off. Searching for her second Classic win on the day, she found it on the 40th lap, taking the checkered flag.
