Oswego High School swimmers kicked off the new season in spectacular fashion on Wednesday night with a 98-82 win over Baldwinsville.
There were some very fast swims from both teams during the course of the close meet. However, Oswego would end up pulling away following a 1-2-3 finish in the diving competition (1st – Sophomore Alex Carl, 2nd – Senior Austin Demott, 3rd – Freshman Nick Lewis) and seven first place finishes courtesy of seniors Drake Becksted, Reeve Callen, and Zach Gerber.
Becksted was a double winner, placing first in the 50 freestyle (21.46) and the 100 butterfly (51.56). Both times qualify him for the NY State Championship meet and the 51.56 in the butterfly is a new school record. Callen’s two wins, in the 200 freestyle (1:47.10) and the 100 freestyle (48.53), also qualify him for the State Championship meet. Gerber’s 1:06.64 in the 100 breaststroke was right on his best time and enough to win the event by more than four seconds.
The three seniors were also a driving force in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Oswego was the first to the wall in both relays by a considerable margin. Freshman Dylan Harrington teamed up with the trio to help win the 200 freestyle relay and junior Jeremy Galvin joined them for the 400 freestyle relay to aid them in finish more than twenty seconds ahead of Baldwinsville. Freshman Ben McCrobie proved to be the fastest distance swimmer to compete, placing first in the 500 freestyle with a best time of 5:58.53.
The diving squad of Alex Carl, Austin Demott, and Nick Lewis also enjoyed a lot of success at the meet, finishing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively. Carl (169.90) and Demott (168.95) both qualified for Sectionals with their impressive scores, and Lewis had a very impressive first meet, landing all his dives successfully.
Other notable swims included Dylan Harrington’s pair of Sectional qualifying swims in the 200 I.M. (2:24.59) and the 100 breaststroke (1:16.50). Both times are personal bests for him. Sophomore Alex Kemper had two impressive swims, in the 50 freestyle (25.46) and the 100 freestyle (57.53). Those times were right on his bests and were fast enough to take second (leading to a 1-2 Buccaneer finish in both events) and also qualify him for Sectional Championships in both. Junior Josh Costo also had a lifetime best at the meet, his coming in the 100 freestyle (1:00.12) to help the Bucs outscore Baldwinsville 12 to 4 in the event. Jeremy Galvin swam an in-season best in the 100 backstroke (1:05.13) to place second in the event. Junior Jimmy Dillon also had a great swim in the 100 backstroke. His time of 1:10.50 was fast enough to qualify him for Sectional’s.
Overall this was a great meet for us to start the season with. Everyone swam and dove well. All in all we had nine Bucs qualify for Sectional’s and two for State’s. I was pleasantly surprised to see the athletes on this team to rise to the levels that they did at this meet. The team has been very focused in practice and I’m glad that they are racing with such universal success. We will continue to build on what we’ve already done and try to set the bar even higher for our next meet, which will be an invitational at Hilton in Section 5 this weekend.
Bowlers Open Strong
The boys’ varsity bowling team swept Auburn taking all three points with an impressive overall score of 3115.
Matt Clemons was a leader with an impressive 800 series including a very impressive 290 game. Dan Cliff also turned out a very impressive high game score of a 298. Cameron Byrne was also a key player in the success as he had an impressive 613 series including a high game of 259. Gavin Gilbert’s high game of 255 was also a key to success for the boy’s team as well as a personal success.
The girls’ team put forth a good fight taking one of three points against Auburn.
Leading the team were veteran members Christie Hoefer and Ashlee Lytle. Christie held her composure and produced an impressive 505 series with a high game of 188, while Ashlee did the same with a 515 series and an impressive high game of 200.
Also taking a lead role for the Lady Bucs’ bowling was rookie Sierra Adams who bowled an impressive 504 including a 182 game. Rookie Caitlin Clemons was also a big with a third game reaching 183 and helping them to win that final point.
Overall for their first match the girls bowled as a team and showed extreme potential for future competition.
Grapplers Fall to Square
The varsity wrestling team lost to Central Square 60-21.
At 152 Miguel Vazquez decisioned Jake Fortune 12-6 while Buc 170 pounder Mike Ruggion pinned Steven Guerin in 3:57. Oswego’s 220 pound division wrestler Jacob Rodriguez pinned D.J. Patchen in 3:03 for the Buc points.
At 106 Austin Coleman was pinned by Blake Engebretsen in 1:51 while at 120 Dashaun Grimes was pinned in 5:16 by Ben Mayer. Jordan Perchway, at 126, lost via a pin to Nick Phillips in 4:16
Square received forfeit wins at 132 for Josh Brown, 138 for Nathan Rogers, 145 for Dillan Purdy and 160 with Randy Martin, as well as 182 pounder Spencer Norton and 195 pounder Nick Baker.
Varsity Lady Buc Five Loses Twice
Oswego was on the road this week with games at CBA and Auburn.
Against the Brothers the game was relatively tight through the first half as the Bucs trailed 29-23 at intermission. However a 19-8 outburst by CBA in the third allowed the eventual winner to pull away and come home with a 56-43 victory.
Taylor Giglio and Courtney Louis each scored a dozen points for the Bucs while Emily Barlow added five, Maddy Muckey four, McKenna Brooks three, and two each by Margo Dillon, Reilly Patrick and Erick Atkins.
Oswego then headed to Auburn and once again played solidly in the first half as the Bucs trailed 24-22 at the intermission. In the third quarter the Maroons outscored the Bucs by five points and ended up with a 57-45 victory.
Louis and Giglio had 13 and 11 points respectively while Dillon scored seven and Patrick a half dozen. Scoring two points apiece were Bella Winklestine, Muckey, Brooks and Atkins.
Lady Buc Skaters Edged
It was an emotional game for the Oswego Lady Bucs hockey team as the squad played Alexandria Bay at Crisafulli Rink.
With 9:35 left in the final period Oswego’s Allie Rogers was checked from behind and eventually had to be carried off on a stretcher as emergency personnel rushed her to the local hospital.
After nearly a half hour of treating the injured Buc the game resumed. At that point it was a 1-1 contest. Oswego resumed the action with a four minute power play, but was unable to put the puck in the net. Finally with just over five minutes left Jessica Prance put home a rebound past Madisyn Whalen for the eventual winner.
Oswego and Alex Bay traded goals in the first period with the Bucs getting a goal from Sarah Mancuso while Sage Dudley and Rogers assists.
In the end Whalen ended up with 29 saves for Oswego and Kayla Rios of ABay stopped 21.
Rogers was released from the hospital that evening and is anticipated to return to the Buc line up in the near future.
Jayvee Lady Buc Five
The Oswego JV Lady Buccaneer’s played CBA on Tuesday night and lost 36-25.
Oswego started out pressing which led to Oswego fouling, but foul calls were also going against CBA.
Oswego made only 2 of 12 foul shots in the first half. However, with tough defense the Bucs went into the half tied 13-13.
Starting out the second half, CBA came out strong hitting three quick baskets to change the flow of the game. Oswego continued to foul and struggled at the foul line. In the end they shot just 4 for 22 from the foul line which hurt them in the end and resulted in the loss of the game
Against Auburn the Bucs won 36-32
To start the game Auburn came out strong taking it hard to the basket and looked to score outside against Oswego’s 2-3 zone. The Bucs trailed by five at the end of the first quarter.
With leadership from Kerrigan Cummins, Rachael Purtell, Katie Knopp, Brenna Riley and Nicole McCarthy the Bucs were able to work together and press full court. They kept the game close going into the half trailing 22-15. In the second half Oswego came out with a full court man to man and denied the guards with every opportunity.
Rachael Purtell played tenacious defense getting steals and deflections which frustrated Auburn. Nicole McCarthy stepped up and get three offensive rebound put backs to take the lead. Kelly Skinner and Brenna Riley were a big force down low blocking shots and not allowing second chance shots on defense. Staying calm and composed Oswego was able to seal the win with a freethrow from Katie Knopp putting the Bucs up 4 to end the game.
Seventh Grade Victory
The seventh grade boys’ basketball team avenged an earlier season buzzer beater loss by defeating Central Square 33-27 at OMS.
Nathan Schultzkie led the Bucs with 10 points. Derek Cahill and Pat Dowdle scored 9 each. Nick Sullivan chipped in 5 points. The Bucs improved to 4-2 on the season.
The 8th grade team lost to a very talented Central Square squad 41-23.
Trey Clark led the Bucs with 8 points. Trevor Bradshaw had 5, while Nick Chalifoux, Roman Madlangbayan and Jacob Gerber each chipped in 4 points.
Oswego is 3-3 on the season.
