OSWEGO, New York – The Rudy’s B Mites finished up their 2009-10 season with strong games on their home ice, and as participants at the recent Bob Mercurio Extreme Freeze Mite Tournament in Whitestown.
Rudy’s 10 Lysander 4
The B Mites picked up a 10-4 win at home against Lysander in recent action with the help of a strong first period. The offense came out ready to play, and Rudy’s jumped out to an early 5-1 lead. Forwards Andrew Noyes and Mark Jones tallied each of the goals in the first period, and finished the game with 5 and 4 goals, respectively.
Evan Giocondo recorded five saves in net on the day, earning a well-deserved victory.
“This was a real team effort,†said Rudy’s Head Coach Mark Fierro. “Each player was involved in helping our team come out with the win.â€Â
Cammi Ahern scored an unassisted goal in the second period, and Katie Fierro, Cole Cullinan and Spencer Stepien added assists in the game.
Rudy’s 3 Fulton 2
After falling behind 2-1 to Fulton, the Rudy’s B Mites tallied two goals within a minute of each other late in the third period to capture a 3-2 win at Cullinan Ice Rink in Oswego.
“This team just found a way to win,†said Fierro. “The kids never gave up, worked hard, and really scrapped their way to victory.â€Â
Mark Jones had three goals in the game.
Rudy’s 7 Whitestown 3
Rudy’s kicked off the Whitestown Tournament strong, with a 7-3 win over host team Whitestown.
Spencer Stepien got the scoring started at the 7:37 mark of the first period with a goal past the Whitestown net minder. Forward Mark Jones kept the offensive attack on thereafter for Rudys with five goals over the next two periods. Cammie Ahern added another goal to help secure the victory.
Goaltender Tyler Wallace proved to be the difference in Rudy’s win, recording 14 saves.
“I was very pleased with how the team played,†said Fierro. “The team worked well on both sides of the ice. Our offense was clicking and Tyler kept the defense strong throughout the game.â€Â
Thousand Islands 5 Rudy’s 3
Rudy’s played their toughest game of the year in their second game matchup at the Whitestown Tournament.
In a hard contested battle against a strong Thousand Islands team, Rudy’s came up short 5-3.
Forward Mark Jones netted three goals in the contest.
Oswego was down a goal early in the first period, but responded with two goals by Jones to go up 2-1. After Thousand Islands tied it up at two apiece, Jones added one more in the second period. Rudy’s could not stop a tough second and third period attack by Thousand Islands, however, giving up three unanswered.
“I am so proud of this team and how they played against this opponent,†said Fierro. “Thousand Islands was much more experienced and truly a bigger group of kids, but our team fought hard throughout and nearly pulled out the victory.â€Â
The defense really stepped up and was led by Julia Roman, Nick Burnett, Lucas Shepardson, and Anthony DiBlasi.
Tyler Wallace registered 14 key saves in the loss.
Watertown 3 Rudy’s 1
For a second straight game, Rudy’s was unable to hold onto an early lead, losing 3-1 to Watertown in their final game of the Whitestown tournament.
Forward Mark Jones scored the lone goal for Rudy’s off assists by Spencer Stepien and Cole Cullinan, early in the first period.
Tyler Wallace once again played very strong in net with 15 saves.
“This was a great weekend for our team,†said Fierro. “Despite the two losses, there was some awesome hockey being played out there. We certainly made progress on both ends of the ice throughout the tournament.â€Â
According to Fierro, the team made great strides throughout the season and finished up winning seven of their last 10 games.
The 2009-10 Rudy’s team consisted of Jones, Noyes, Stepien, Ahern, Wallace, Cullinan, Giocondo, Fierro, Roman, Burnett, DiBlasi, Shepardson, Bryson Bush, and Isaiah Raby.
“The coaches are all very proud of this team and how strong they worked in practice and throughout the season,†Fierro said.
