OSWEGO, NY – The swimmers gained a solid win while the girls’ ice hockey team started the season 2-0.
Meanwhile, the boys’ basketball team nearly ended Baldwinsville’s winning streak.
It was a full weekend of sports action with hockey, basketball, and indoor track all in action.
Hockey Opens With Sweep
The Lady Bucs hockey team got the best of the weather as the season finally started.
This past weekend the Bucs scored a pair of 4-2 wins over Salmon River and Massena.
Seniors Devyn Hutcheson and Kaitlin Friel started the team off to a quick start as the combined for a seven-goal and three-assist weekend.
In between the pipes Madisyn Whalen finished with 48 saves through the weekend.
Also scoring during the weekend was Whitney Daino who had her goal against Salmon River.
Oswego will return to action on Wednesday night at Potsdam.
Swimmers Out Of Blocks Quickly
The Oswego boys’ swimming and diving team splashed to a 96-68 victory over Baldwinsville.
The meet started off with Luke Familo, Geoff Taylor, Zac Handley and Reeve Callen swimming a come from behind victory in the 200 Medley Relay.
Jeremy Galvin, Josh Costo, Billy McSweeney and Alex Shannon placed third in the event for the Bucs.
In the 200 Freestyle, Drake Becksted swam a 1:52.44 to give him a victory.
Josh Saternow, (2:09.01) finished in third place and Jim Dillon’s (2:11.30) was fast enough to place him fourth in the 200 Free.
Sean Stegmoller, (2:13.33), Zach Gerber (2:15.35) and Dylan Harrington (2:34.02) placed second, third and fourth respectively in the 200 Individual Medley.
In the splash and dash 50 Freestyle, Reeve Callen, (23.19) won the event for the Bucs.
Zach Handley’s (25.85) placed him second in the 50, and Geoff Taylor took a fourth with a (26.41).
Also swimming the 50 Free for Bucs were Alex Kemper, (27.77), Billy McSweeney, 28.13, Alex Shannon, (29.13) , Mike Kelly(30.15) Nate Wagner (31.45) Joe Corradino (34.85) and Brendon Reed (38.16).
The diving duo of Alex Carl and Austin Demont performed very well and placed second and third.
The Bucs continued their good performances with Reeve Callen (50.76) Luke Familo (56.30) and Josh Saternow (59.12) placing first, second and fourth in the 100 Freestyle.
Swimmers also participating in the 100 Free for the Bucs were Jeremy Galvin, (58.68), Josh Costo (1:04.30), Alex Kemper (1:04.72), Mike Kelly (1:08.57), Brian Abbott (1:18.41, Brendon Reed (1:19.68) and Nate Wagner (1:24.31).
Drake Becksted’s 5:15.61 gave him a victory in the 500 Freestyle. Jim Dillon swam a (6:05.95) which was fast enough to place him second.
The team continued to have very good swims with the 200 Freestyle relay team of Reeve Callen, Zac Gerber, Sean Stegmoller and Drake Becksted swimming away from their competition and just missing the state cut time.
Geoff Taylor, Josh Costo, Josh Saternow and Jim Dillon also had a very good performance and placed third.
A very strong performance came for the Bucs when the Backstroke event took place.
Luke Familo (1:05.91), Jeremy Galvin (1:08.61) and Alex Carl (1:25.29) scored important points for the team.
In the final event of the meet, the 400 Freestyle relay, the team of Zac Gerber, Sean Stegmoller, Reeve Callen and Drake Becksted won the event by more than 15 seconds.
Jeremy Galvin, Zach Handley, Jim Dillon and Josh Saternow placed third.
Coach Rick Klein said that he was very happy with the performances that the team gave and noted, “It is still very early in the season. The team has been practicing very hard and today they saw the benefits of hard work and perseverance.”
The varsity boys’ basketball team had a good battle with visiting Baldwinsville on Friday night at Powers Gymnasium, but fell 48-45.
The game was close throughout, with the largest deficit being eight points for the Bucs early in the fourth quarter.
Oswego led through the early going, holding a 10-7 lead after the first quarter, and a slim 24-23 lead at halftime.
The Bees played a strong third quarter, outscoring Oswego 12-6, to take a five-point lead going into the final eight minutes.
Although the Bucs outscored Baldwinsville 14-12 in the fourth, it wasn’t enough to overcome the Bees.
While the Bucs continue to play very strong team defense, with tremendous energy and heart, their offense let them down.
Missing several easy field goal opportunities, as well as shooting a dismal 10 for 26 (38%) from the free throw line were major factors in the defeat.
Once again leading the Bucs in scoring was senior captain Jake Metcalf with 18 points, followed by Corey Galletta and Michael Thompson with seven each, Ryan Patrick and Connor Riley with four each, Dustin Sands with three and Kevin Carpentier adding two points.
Upcoming games for the Bucs (1-2) are at Auburn on Tuesday and home against Watertown on Thursday.
Bucs On The Run
Junior Whitney Ford, finished fifth overall in the 300 meter dash, to lead the Oswego Coed Indoor Track team at the John Arcaro Memorial Invitational.
Competing in a very strong field, Ford ran a personal best time of 45.6 in the race, over the newly resurfaced mondo track at Hamilton College.
Rapidly improving senior Kaitlin Holloway shattered her previous best in the 300 meter dash, by more than five seconds, to outdistance the field in her section of the race.
Junior Peter Khamis also ran a best for the Bucs, with a fine time of 43.1 in the 300 meter dash.
Other strong performances for Oswego were turned in by Ariel Bouffard and Sean Benjamin in the 600 meter run, Leah Weiss and Matt Bivens in the 1,000 meter run, and Deondra Smith in the 55 meter dash.
Oswego will return to action on Dec. 28, traveling to Cortland State College, for the Holiday Relays.
Boys’ Hockey Falls Twice
Oswego lost two games during the weekend on the ice as the Bucs lost at Crisafulli Rink on Friday 6-2 to league foe Cazenovia and then lost a 5-4 verdict to Fairport of Section V on Saturday.
Penalties haunted the Bucs as Cazenovia scored four power play goals en route to the victory.
The visitors jumped out to a 2-1 first period lead and then broke open the game late in the second to lead 5-2 after two periods.
For the Bucs Fred Donabella had a goal while Josh Sova scored one and assisted on the other. John Phillips and John Kaplewicz each had assists for the Bucs.
In net Chase Izyk stopped 36 shots while Joe Vecchiarelli had 14 stops for the visiting team.
The Bucs play again on Thursday night in a league game against Skaneateles at the SUNY Oswego Campus Center.
Lady Bucs Fall in Non-League Game
The Oswego High School girls’ varsity basketball team lost 42-34 on Saturday afternoon to visiting Hilton.
The game was close in the early going and was tied 8-8 after the first quarter, but Hilton was able to string together key baskets, grab crucial rebounds and force turnovers to gain the upper hand.
By halftime the Bucs were trailing 17-12, but were still very much in the game.
Hilton started to gain a bit of breathing room in the third.
Late in the game the lead was nearly 20 before the Bucs were able to trim it down to eight points at the end.
Oswego was paced by Alexis Gillard and Taylor Giglio with a dozen points apiece while Sam McCarrick scored four and Becca Martin, Courtney Louis and Bella Winklestine each had two points.
Seventh Grade Cagers Lost
The seventh grade basketball team lost (1-4) at Clary Middle School-Corcoran 54-32.
Trailing by only two at the end of one quarter, the Cougars were able to gradually extend their lead throughout.
Strong efforts were turned in by Isaac Annal, Trevor Bradshaw, Matt Morrison and Roman Madlangbayan.
In jayvee girls’ basketball, Oswego lost to Hilton 38-35.
Oswego started the game down five points going into the second quarter. They cut the lead going into the half 20-22.
The Bucs came back to take the lead by one point with a minute to go in the game.
After two steals from the Cadets the Bucs lost their lead and were down three.
With a final attempt to tie the score with a three with 10 seconds to go on the clock, the Bucs missed the shot leaving the final score to be 35-38.
The team gave a valiant effort, but in the end lost the game by three points.
Leading scores for the Bucs were Rachael Purtell with nine, Kelly Chetney with eight and Nicole McCarthy with five points.
