Save Fort Ontario“Significant action” was seen in the Assembly and Senate regarding the possibility of reopening Fort Ontario as well as several other state parks and historic sites that have fallen victim this spring to the state’s budget morass. It’s possible Oswego’s historic site could be open for Memorial Day Weekend.

Hannibal Voters OK Budget, Cut Down Size of Board of Ed

A Hannibal taxpayer prepares to vote as district clerk Lisa  Shortslef tends to the voting machine.After months of tension and trauma, Hannibal’s proposed 2010-11 school budget passed by a comfortable margin Tuesday night.  The budget cuts into academic programs and band but preserves varsity sports.  Voters also decided to reduce the Board of Education from 9 members to 7 and elected 3 people to seats on the board.

Hannibal Budget Hearing Focuses on Cost of Contracts

District business official Nancy Henner runs through the  information in the budget public hearing, as Superintendent of Schools  Mike DiFabio looks on.Hannibal’s budget eliminates or downsizes 15 positions and raises the tax levy 2.99% in a year in which Gov. Paterson’s across-the-board education aid cuts will drain more than a million dollars from Hannibal. It cuts into the Reading First program credited with helping get the district off the state’s “in need of improvement” list, eliminates band for 5th graders and preserves varsity and modified sports.
