Oswego Salvation Army To Thank Community With Free Concert

Oct 29, 2009 at 6:06 am

OSWEGO, NY – In a show of gratitude and ‘thanks’ for more than 120 years of support, the Oswego Salvation Army invites the community to a free performance of the Empire Brass, Chorus, Dance and Timbrels on Nov. 7 at the Oswego Elks Lodge.

The 90-minute performance will feature a 42-piece brass ensemble, chorus numbers, interpretive dance and timbrels, the equivalent of modern-day tambourines.

Members of the decades-old Salvation Army musical group have performed sacred and classical music throughout Europe and the United States.

“We hope to inspire and encourage people, and bring the message of hope from the Lord, because that’s what it’s all about for us,” said Oswego Salvation Army Major Corinne Hayes, who plays alto horn in the band alongside her husband, Capt. Kenneth Hayes, on the tuba.

The couple has administered the Oswego Salvation Army Corps for many years, and expressed gratitude for community support, seen most recently during the current $1.2 million “I Believe” capital campaign for their new building renovation.

“The free concert is our way of saying thank you to the community for the support they’ve offered us over the years,” said Barbara Bateman, advisory chair of the Oswego Salvation Army.

She added that the “I Believe” capital campaign is halfway to its goal, thanks to community involvement.

The Empire Brass concert will begin at 7 p.m. at the Oswego Elks Lodge, 132 W. Fifth St.

Admission is free, but $5 suggested donations will be accepted at the door.

Guests can enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres and non-alcoholic refreshments during intermission, as well as a silent auction featuring theme baskets with merchandise from various local businesses.

All proceeds will go to the Oswego Salvation Army Capital Campaign.

The Oswego Salvation Army is part of the International Salvation Army organization, which is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church.

The local citadel provides food, education, services and spiritual support to the local community.

Tickets to the free concert will be available in Salvation Army buckets placed throughout town.

To inquire about the event or obtain free tickets, contact the “I Believe” campaign office at (315) 216-4161.
