AmeriCorps Member Guides “Blast into the Past” Voyage

The Friends of History welcomes back AmeriCorps member Emily Czirr for the new summer children’s program “Blast into the Past”. This will be Emily’s third summer at the Pratt House Museum and second summer through Oswego AmeriCorps where she will continue to provide history education to youth in the area. The AmeriCorps program promotes strengthening community involvement for children and families in Oswego County, which Emily began to incorporate at Friends of History last summer through the creation of an educational packet for the museum.

A May 2008 graduate from Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, N.Y., Emily received a B.A. in History, concentrating in American History. Through her studies at the colleges she also had minors in Environmental Studies and Sociology. Emily will be attending SUNY Albany in the fall for a Master of Arts in Public History. Working through AmeriCorps at the Friends of History has been an important experience for Emily as she stated, “Working for both of these organizations has been a wonderful learning opportunity for my future goal of working at a museum. Implementing the educational packet I created last summer through AmeriCorps into a more in-depth program is a great way for the Friends of History to reach children and help them become more interested in both our local and national past.”

“Blast into the Past,” sponsored in part by the Fulton Polish Home, will be split into two sessions for ages 4-12 and a third session for ages 13-16 at the Pratt House Museum, 177 South First Street, Fulton. Session one for 4-7 years will take place on Wednesday July 9, 16, and 23 and Session two on Wednesday July 30, August 6, and 13 with historical topics of Nature and History, Early Home Life, and Early Entertainment discussed during each three day session. The first session for 8-12 years will take place on Friday July 11, 18, and 25 and second session on Friday August 1, 8, and 15. This age group will learn about Early Settlement and Transportation, War and Industry, and Entertainment and Art. All sessions for 4-12 years will run from 9:30am- 12noon, with each day including a take home craft, snack, and fun learning activities. The third session for ages 13-16 will be held Tuesday July 15, 22, 29, and August 5 and 12 from 12:30pm- 3pm. This session will give a behind the scenes look at a museum, as they will research, design, and display their own exhibit.

Sessions one and two will cost $10 for a 3-day session or $5 per day. The third session will be $15 for the entire 5 days. Family discounts will be available for those with 2 or more children.
