You could be forgiven for looking at the scores Fulton students earned on state standard tests and concluding that student performance is dropping fast. After all, in 2009, 69% of Fulton 3rd graders were judged to be proficient at the state standard for English Language Arts. In 2011, just 47% were proficient.

Girl Scout Claudia Chetney and sixth graders throughout the Oswego City School District are asking seniors at Bishop’s Commons “Are you smarter than a sixth grader?” The event taking place on Oct. 9, is part of Chetney’s Bronze Service Award and is modeled after the popular game show on TV. It’s open to the public and will collect canned or non-perishable goods at the door for donation to the local Human Concerns Center and Salvation Army.
After hearing an update on the Race To The Top initiative for nearly an hour Tuesday night, members of the Oswego City School District’s board of education agreed with the plan in principle. However, the part about pulling educators out of the classroom to be trained didn’t sit well with the board.
