While I enjoyed shopping at this year’s farmers’ market at its new location at Bullhead Point and talking with the vendors and meeting friends, I miss the attraction of the market downtown.
The market is more than a store; it’s a place for the community to come together. In a way it’s a community wide social event.
When people think of Oktoberfest, most visualize a grand celebration in Germany. What began as an event held in 1810 to celebrate a royal wedding in Munich has grown into a worldwide celebration, marked by special festivals and gatherings in communities across the globe. A big part of these celebrations is, you guessed it, craft beer. In recent years, the popularity of craft beer has skyrocketed.
I was horrified to see that the Oswego County Humane Society just featured Pearl, an adorable black kitten, as Pet of the Week – just a few days before Halloween! Don’t they know that black cats are used in Satanic rituals on Halloween? All responsible animal welfare organizations suspend black cat adoptions for the month of October.
From the theories of Aristotle to relationships on Facebook, the latest co-authored book by SUNY Oswego sociology professor Tim Delaney examines “Friendship and Happiness: The Connection Between the Two.” Delaney’s frequent co-author, St. John Fisher College philosophy professor Tim Madigan, first proposed the idea of a book based on Aristotle’s three types of friendships and carrying principles forward to the electronic age.
Oswego County Opportunities Development Director Margaret Barclay announces that Johnston’s Propane Service will be a Silver Level sponsor for the agency’s upcoming “Giving Thanks” fundraiser in support of its “Sleep Tight” initiative.

In recognition of October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month, employees from the Oswego County Department of Social Services dressed in purple on October 19 for National Wear Purple Day to raise awareness of domestic violence and support the efforts of Oswego County Opportunities Services to Aid Families program.
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, representatives from Price Chopper in Fulton will be at Oswego County Opportunities Cancer Services 8th annual Human Pink Ribbon Ceremony to offer pink carnations to the first 50 survivors to attend the event.
