Can We Make Fulton’s Downtown More Attractive As A Destination For Residents, Visitors?

To The Editor:

While I enjoyed shopping at this year’s farmers’ market at its new location at Bullhead Point and talking with the vendors and meeting friends, I miss the attraction of the market downtown.

The market is more than a store; it’s a place for the community to come together.

In a way it’s a community wide social event.

I’ve spoken with friends from Towpath Towers and others that live or work downtown and they have expressed similar feelings about the need for more downtown social activities.

“Tunes in June” at the downtown gazebo is a great way for our community to come together and to attract visitors.

The music, the food, and the people are wonderful.

Folks of all ages come outside.

They bring their lawns chairs and wheeled walkers or just sit on the stone walls or picnic benches and enjoy the day in downtown Fulton.

Some even dance and join in the singing.

I’d love to see more of this entertainment and attraction, more of this social event, downtown.

Could Wednesday’s “Tunes” run through July?

Could “farmers’ market” booths be added to “Tunes” the same way the musicians and restaurants rotate with a few different vendors each week?

Could a sidewalk art or quilt show be added or start a whole attraction to take place on a weekend?

Fulton is quietly changing.

We are busy making walking trails through the city.

New businesses are opening.

There are so many things happening in Fulton that need to be celebrated.

Our community is improving.

Fulton Block Builders is adding so much to our community in the way of bringing people together and making our city more attractive.

Let’s add more activities to our downtown to attract visitors and show them the appeal of Fulton.

Fulton is a great place to live – I’m glad I’m a Fultonian.

I want to build on what is working, add to our downtown entertainment, shopping and socializing, and share it with everyone, residents and visitors alike!

  1. Ya ya ya. I see your campaign picture of old motel. Why not walk a couple of blocks and take picture of swimming pool and swing sets with no swings. You want to do do much .. Start there. Let’s see what you have to say.

  2. Repair most of the streets. The street coming into Fulton on the westside from Oswego is a complete mess…. has been for years.

  3. The pool is a slightly different issue from promoting our downtown as an entertainment, culture, and shopping opportunity for residents, workers, and visitors, but yes Friends of Fulton Parks will be happy to accept your help.

Friends of Fulton Parks is always happy to accept donations and always welcomes helpers and volunteers to continue the improvements in our City.

  4. Merlino. If the pool was open and the park had swings. We the community could go to the market early morning.. Then to pool. While kids are swimming and swinging . we can roast corn on the grill . It all ends up community ……..what is your plan for the pool and old motel. Let’s here from you. We can’t swim in the mayor’s pool because he is dredging it for the next forty years.

  5. Love the comments that always goes back to the pool. Sorry to say but the pool is not going to save Fulton. People want to share all these stories of families going, having a picnic. The reality is that rowlee beach pool always had a vast number of unsupervised youth, no family members with them. Portion of young teens cursing, fighting after the pool would close. It was not a family friendly place. Unless that can change any pool in our city will end the same way.

  6. Dear George. It’s not just the pool. It’s the entire city. We have become the city of demolition. City of Oswego has a mayor with wisdom. Why can’t Fulton be that way. Myers has yet to respond about what he thinks about. Thats how our people I city hall works.

  7. Dear George, oh you’re so right the bulldozer should come in and plow Fulton under. All I hear about is all the grants that Oswego is receiving. The mayor and common counsel should all resign and be replaced with someone that is more progressive. All the money we have spent on the lake in the demolition of the Nestlé plant could’ve been put towards something else. The lake needs to be filled in there is no saving it. The taxpayers have no idea what his been sent on the demolition for the Nestlé property. The mayors office is skewing the numbers. We will never know the true facts of how much money was spent to demolish that site. Is there anyway that the mayor can be removed from office for his incompetency? The common Council is just a puppet for the mayor they do whatever he tells them instead of standing up for themselves to do what is right for the taxpayers. I for one am sick of what’s happened to the city of Fulton .

  8. Mr. Merlino – Your vision of a rejuvenated downtown is uplifting. I’m glad someone has the vision to see the beauty in our small city. It’s the small things like what you are talking about that makes the bigger things possible. Comments on this page have absolutely nothing to do with what you wrote. Haters are going to hate and complainers will continue to complain. I love this city, it’s where I choose to call home.

  9. Thank you Swozie. You are part of the upward spiral of Fulton. We can do this.
