The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection on West Fifth Street in Oswego celebrated St. Francis Day Blessings of the Animals today (Oct. 15) with a worship service celebrating all creation and especially animal companions.
Palermo Elementary is turning the page when it comes to encouraging and promoting family literacy. As a continuation to the school’s year-long reading initiative, the Parent-Teacher Club recently hosted its annual Snuggle up with a Good Book event, which drew about 40 people to the school cafeteria.
North Volney Methodist Church will hold a scalloped potato and ham supper on October 19. Serving will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m.
Carolyn Austin, 76, of Fulton, died Friday October 13, 2017, at Morningstar Care Center, Oswego.
The Fulton McDonald’s brought together local law enforcement for a public safety appreciation day on Saturday, October 14. Members of the Fulton Fire Department and Fulton Police Department joined B104.7 radio hosts, Ronald McDonald, and Hamburglar to interact with local families. Kids were able to answer fire safety questions with FFD firefighters to receive a bag full of information and items to encourage fire safety practices at home and take a turn sitting in the driver seat of a fire engine. Fulton police officers answered questions, handed out information and treats for kids, and allowed an inside look at patrol cars.
Elaine P. Violando, 73, of Bowens Corners, passed away on Friday October 13, 2017, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse.
The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a fatal crash that occurred Friday evening (Oct. 13) on Interstate 81 near the Lafayette exit in the town of Lafayette. The victim, a man in his 30s from Syracuse, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the FedEx tractor trailer, a 43-year-old man from Oswego County, was not injured.
New York State has published an extensive “Haunted History Trail” brochure. There are several places in Oswego County on the list. There are two in Mexico – Starr Clark Tin Shop and Underground Railroad Museum, and Casey’s Cottage at Mexico Point Park. Both are only open with prior reservations. Casey’s Cottage, designed by Dr. William Casey, a Columbia University professor spent his summers turning the carriage house at Mexico Point into an 11th century manor house. After his death in 1978 visitors reported hearing faint organ music, cries for help, candles jumping off the shelves and other unusual phenomena.
Clara Blaisdell Davis Dial, 91, of Oswego, passed away on Wednesday October 11, 2017.
This is the first summer for the Fulton Block Builders (FBB) and it has been a very successful one. Linda Eagan, the FBB director, has been extremely pleased with the exterior improvements being made by homeowners, however there is one group she is particularly happy to be working with. FBB has had the opportunity to engage five different landlords who are revitalizing eight different properties throughout the city. One of the guiding principles for Eagan has come from Charles Buki, a founder of the Healthy Neighborhood Initiative; which FBB is based on. “When we say ‘healthy neighborhoods’ we do not mince words. We believe that lack of income should not disqualify people from growing up and living in nurturing communities. So when we say ‘healthy neighborhoods’ we mean a place where it makes sense for people to invest their time and energy and money.” – Charles Buki.
