Black Student Union at SUNY Oswego To Celebrate ‘Remarkable’ 50 Years

As a centerpiece of Black History Month activities, the 50th anniversary observance of one of SUNY Oswego’s most enduring and active student organizations, the Black Student Union, will celebrate an illustrious history of generations of student leaders raising awareness of issues, doing community service projects, arranging campus appearances by such global luminaries as Muhammad Ali and much more. “We really wanted to make the BSU annual dinner and variety show special so alumni would come back,” said Keonna Wren, the Black Student Union’s current president.

Roger Clark Plans Return to Supermodified Competition for First Time Since 2000 Season

Oswego Speedway has been an important part of Roger Clark’s weekends for the past several decades. He made his Supermodified racing debut in 1990 with his self-built blue No. 55 and competed in the big block ranks for some ten years. Out of the action since 2000, but still at the track as a crew member for Tim Snyder for just about every race since, Clark is looking forward to a return to the driver’s seat in 2018.

Kestner Retires After Distinguished Career

The Oswego County Legislature’s Human Services Committee presented Donna Kestner with a certificate of appreciation on her retirement after 19 years of service. Kestner is the director of the Oswego County Veterans’ Services Office. In July 2015, the State Commander of the American Legion named her Veterans Service Officer of the Year at the group’s annual convention.

Thom Benedetto and his faithful Labrador retriever K9, Philip, have been actively training toward certification as a search and rescue team. They have attended numerous local, state and regional training programs, including a four-day national training conference in North Carolina, and most recently a two-day Human Remains Detection seminar in Pennsylvania under the direction of Matt Zarrella and Scott Carlsten, master trainers for the International Police Work Dog Association in search and rescue.

More Business Killing Regulation

Unfortunately, New York has a habit of creating policies that are punishing to businesses. In the past two years, business owners in New York state have had to ingest several onerous mandates such as new wage orders, higher minimum wages, and a new paid family leave policy. Now the Department of Labor is considering another mandate, known as the “call-in pay” regulation that will, if adopted, place additional strain on those business effected.
