Oswego County Training and Careers Expo at CiTi March 23

MEXICO – Area high school students will be able to explore local training and employment opportunities later this month at the upcoming Training and Careers Expo.

The event, hosted by Oswego County Workforce NY and the Center for Instruction, Technology and Innovation (CiTi), will be held on March 23 at the CiTi main campus in Mexico and is open to all juniors and seniors of Oswego County.

This will be the second annual Training and Careers Expo, which was created as a way for local employers to introduce older high school students to the good paying, local job opportunities available in Oswego County, the type of candidates they look for and the background and training required to qualify for those jobs.

The expo focuses on careers in advanced manufacturing, healthcare, energy and the skilled trades. Representatives from area training providers will also be available to discuss training options and financial aid. More than 200 students attended last year’s expo.

“Our goal has always been to provide students and parents access to well-paying, interesting, local career options that require two or less years of training with local providers,” said Oswego County Workforce NY Employment Specialist, Chad Whelsky.

The following are some of the companies that will be represented at the event: Dynergy, Inc., Exelon Generation, NYS JATCT/IBEW/NECA, Huhtamaki, Oswego Health, Novelis, Plumber’s & Steamfitter’s Local #73, Bryant & Stratton College and Rehab Resources. Training providers including Cayuga Community College, NYS Department of Labor, CiTi and Oswego County Workforce New York will be available to offer information on courses and training.

Professions represented will include electrical and maintenance mechanics, electricians, pipefitters, welders, nuclear technicians, security guards, licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, as well as occupational and physical therapists.

According to Joseph Reitz from the Novelis plant in Oswego, “In the real world, we are looking for people who want to work the hardest, those who show up early and try hard every day. However, at this point, most students don’t have a lot of job experience to demonstrate these traits, so they really need to focus on developing their skills and establishing great references.”

Students will visit booths to learn more about the job opportunities available, salary, training, expected work habits and career progression of each of the four featured career clusters.
