The 29th Annual Fulton Service Clubs’ Memorial Day Salute Parade is scheduled for Saturday, May 29, 2010 at 10:00 AM.

The parade theme this year is “America the Beautiful”.

The Memorial Day Salute Committee feels that our community has many heroes who are serving or have served in the present conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as veterans who have served their country over the years. These men and women ask for nothing from their fellow American citizens, so it is time to honor them on this Memorial Day weekend. Therefore, this year‘s parade is in honor of all those who have served their country.

For the past 28 years, the four Service Clubs in Fulton which are the Kiwanis, Lions, Sunrise Rotary and Rotary, have chosen to honor our heroes and veterans by featuring them in the annual parade. Fulton’s “Veteran of the Year” for 2010 is John La Clair, a World War II veteran, who served with distinction in the U. S. Air Force from 1942-1945. Mr. LaClair will serve as Grand Marshall of this year’s parade.

The Fulton Memorial Day parade traditionally features children and bands. Many children’s groups have already signed up for the parade this year. There is always room for more groups, businesses, and individuals to be in the parade. lf you are a member of a group who wants to be in this year’s parade, it is still not too late to sign up. Richard Kemmis is this year’s parade chairman and his phone number is 592-4486. Call him if you have questions about the parade, or wish to be in it.

The Memorial Day Salute Committee so far has seven bands signed up for this year‘s parade. There are bands from the United States and Canada. The Brockville Lion’s Steel Drum Band will be back again this year. The Fulton Junior and Senior High School band will also return along with the huge Central Square Middle School band . The Pipe and Drum band signed up for this year is the City of Syracuse Highland Pipe and Drums. The very fun loving Island Band is back along with the Central New York Police and Fireman’s Band. A popular band joining the parade again this year is the Towpath Volunteers Fife and Drum band from Macedon, New York.

Several business and groups are working on floats to place in the parade. Whether you are interested in planning a float, a marching group or want to show off an unusual vehicle, now is the time to act. Your intentions should be made known by April 24th. Kemmis asks that you call him at 592-4486 and he will send you a parade application form.
