Bumsub “Gabriel” Jin, an assistant professor in SUNY Oswego’s communication studies department and a new Ph.D., accepted an international award for his dissertation June 24 in Singapore.

When Governor David Paterson ordered the closure of Fort Ontario State Historic Site, nine-year-old Christopher Colasurdo of Oswego answered the call to action. The fourth grader at Fitzhugh Park School raised more than $1,000 to support the fort through a “hat day†fundraiser.

A minor earthquake rumbled through the area Wednesday afternoon.
Those who felt the shaking said it was mild.
Agencies across the state reported feeling the shake.
Federal earthquake monitors so far report only one earthquake in the region, centered about half an hour north of Ottawa.
The quake has an initial magnitude of 5.2, making it a moderately strong earthquake, and likely to be felt so far from Ottawa.
An earthquake of magnitude 5 on the Richter scale can cause building damage in the immediate area of the quake. About 800 such earthquakes happen around the world each year.

Ada A. Hackett, 81, of Fulton, died Monday at Oswego Hospital.
