New York City Youth Visit Oswego County For Some Fresh Air

Sydney, Cici, and Hayden are excited to get the summer started!A small crowd gathered in the Burger King parking lot in Fulton on Tuesday afternoon. Some families held signs and balloons as they eagerly awaited the arrival of the bus from New York City carrying kids participating in the Fresh Air Fund who will be visiting Upstate New York for the next two weeks. Some are visiting Upstate for the first time. Others are returning to visit the same host families from previous summers.

For many people the Fourth of July means family time, cookouts, barbeque, and fireworks. This year marks 237 years of independence and the United States being its own nation. New Parking Rules Increase Safety at Kiwanis Park

Most attendees of baseball games at Kiwanis Park in Fulton have had issues with parking from time to time. Previously, on the blocks of South Seventh Street between Fay Street and the park “No Parking 7 a.m. – 5 p.m.” signs marked the street. Mayor Woodward announced at Tuesday’s Common Council meeting a code change would go into effect and “No Parking” signs will replace the previous signs.

Former police dog Rika adjusts to retired life

“She is basically a pet,” said Sgt. Craig Westbrook. “Just like any dog, you take her for a walk or throw a Frisbee. All that stuff I didn’t do when she was a police dog, because you don’t want them to associate a tennis ball or a Frisbee with fun. Then when you’re trying to use them to work she comes across a tennis ball and wants to play catch.”

Sunshine Center Opens its Doors to the Community

New and improved! Renovations are coming along wonderfully at Sunshine.After many hours of “hardcore repairs,” new carpets, and tearing down old wallpaper in favor of paint, the Sunshine Community and Childcare Center held its open house on Sunday. It’s the brainchild of Jessica Naioti, inspired by the trouble she had finding reliable childcare for her son, Benjamin. Her hope is that Sunshine becomes the place kids want to be in Fulton, and will tell their friends about.

On her left is Class President Ryan Perry and right is Valedictorian Taylor Beckwith. “This is certainly an important day for all of us,” said Superintendent Donna Fountain before asking the graduating class to give their parents a round of applause for their support over the years. David Wilbert, Hannibal Alumni Class of 2001, was the guest speaker at the event. “Here’s my advice to you,” said Wilbert. “Be successful, follow your heart, and take risks.”

Gale Waas' dog Honani shows off his stuff on the agility course.Gale Waas has been doing what she loves for more than 35 years. She and her husband now own Happy Tails K-9 Training and Agility Center at 1500 County Route 8 in Fulton. Waas’ passion for animals doesn’t end when she locks the gate to the training area. On Sunday, from noon to 4 p.m. at Happy Tails, Waas and the local SPCA will be hosting a Pet Adoption Day.
