Pet of the Week – Pumpkin

Pumpkin gives new meaning to the word, Perky. He is a great cat – about one year old, friendly, sweet, with a beautiful soft coat and gorgeous golden eyes! He is used to poking and prodding grandchildren and a husky dog. He is interested in the other cats in his foster home but has not been formally introduced yet. But he is not aggressive at all so we expect that he would be OK with other cats with proper introductions.

Annual Carnival Highlights The Fun Side of Tennis

After weeks of drills at various locations around the county, young tennis enthusiasts recently had the chance to have some fun with their new skills. According to Shane Evans, supervisor of the USTA Tennis Program at the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau, “The carnival is our end of the year celebration! We invite all of our children that have attended our program to come relax, have fun, and play tennis.”

Port City Honors Retired City Engineer

His fingerprints can be found on just about every single major project the Port City has seen in nearly the past half century. Now, his name will forever be a part of the city landscape. On Saturday (August 12), Anthony Leotta’s plaque was unveiled on the eastern edge of the park along East First Street, which is also home to the Port City’s Peace Garden. The monument recognizes Leotta “for 45+ years” of service to the city. “I’m really not deserving of this honor. But I accept it with great, great humility,” Leotta said. Serving 45 years, Leotta is the longest serving city department head.

Oswego Roller Derby Helps Prevent Suicide

Attend Port City Roller Derby’s bout on Saturday, August 12, and you can help save a life. The event is PCRD’s season closer. It will once again benefit SAVE Central NY (Suicide Awareness Voices of Education). “SAVE is a cause that is close to PCRD’s heart because of the organization’s connection with one of our former derby sisters,” explained Sarah Ada (aka Darth Vada), PCRD Media/Marketing.

Port City To View ‘Partial’ Total Solar Eclipse

On August 21, people all across the United States will pause to gaze into the sky in hopes of catching a glimpse of the total eclipse of the sun. Day will briefly be turned to night. “A total eclipse of the sun will occur on Monday, August 21. It will be visible along an approximately 70-mile wide band from Oregon to South Carolina,” said John Zielinski of SUNY Oswego’s Physics Department. “Outside of this band, only a partial eclipse will be seen. In Oswego, only a partial eclipse will be seen. Proper eye protection must be used to directly view the eclipse.”

Oswego School Officials Get Moving On Math & Movement Program

The National Math Foundation (a not-for-profit national charity) is hosting a Summer Institute teacher training and the Super Fun Math Youth Program through August 10 at Lake Ontario Event and Conference Center in Oswego, featuring the Math & Movement Program. The NMF announced Tuesday that the Oswego City School District is the first recipient of its Math Corps II Program Award. The program is for the entire 2017-18 school year in both Minetto and Charles E Riley elementary schools, the two largest elementary populations.

Oswego City School District Wins National Math Corps Award

The National Math Foundation announced today (August 8) that Oswego City School District is the first recipient of its Math Corps II Program Award. The program is for the entire 2017-18 school year in both Minetto and Charles E Riley elementary schools, (the two largest elementary populations). NMF will coordinate the program from September- June to develop and implement programs, events, training, materials and resource development via a Corps Member placed in the schools.
