Four months after Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas, people are still struggling to rebuild their lives. That is where Mexico middle and high school students in the Advancement Via Individual Determination program came together to spread holiday cheer, hope and stability for the Youngblood Intermediate School in Houston, Texas.
During a portion of their recent virtual field trip to outer space, the children got an up-close look at the moon, saw a sunrise from outer space and learned all about life of astronauts.
Organized by the fourth grade class, participants in grades pre-kindergarten through four and their teachers brought in non-perishable food and personal hygiene products for the Mexico Food Pantry, located within St. Anne Mother of Mary Church.
Fifth graders at Charles E. Riley Elementary School placed themselves into the life and time of characters in “Esperanza Rising” to gain a better understanding of the Great Depression through the lenses of a Mexican farm worker family.
Life skills, teamwork and cookies have created a recipe for success for a handful of students in the work-study program at Fourth Street School in Fulton. The program’s annual Christmas cookie baking event recently took place in the building’s kitchen.
As a holiday surprise to the Mexico Food Pantry and local animal shelters, the New Haven Elementary community joined together to collect non-perishable food items and pet food, supplies and toys for people in need.
Mexico fourth graders were transported centuries back in time to learn great life advice from native leaders. They dove into the culture and circumstances of the 1800s during the interactive “The Keeper’s Voice” performance, as Merry-Go-Round Playhouse actors portrayed real-life and fictional characters of that time.
The Polar Express made its way into the Phoenix Central School District in the days before Christmas, leaving gifts and holiday cheer in its wake at Emerson J. Dillon Middle School.
The Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center will begin its Winter 2018 Sunday Woodland Snowshoe Wanders programs in January, on Sundays, January 7 and 14, at 2 p.m. There is a program fee of just $4 per person or $12 per family, and children younger than three are free.
Decked out in hand-made reindeer and elf hats, the students delighted the audience with a medley of songs such as “Jingle Bells” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”
