Emerson J. Dillon Middle School classrooms transformed into a job fair during a career exploration event today ( Nov. 16). Phoenix students in fifth through eighth grades had the opportunity to attend three separate career day sessions where they met with employees and experts from a variety of fields.
Criteria for membership includes being enrolled in a performing music ensemble and demonstrating service and character strength, as well as maintaining a minimum grade point average of 95 or higher in music and an overall average of 80.
The Oswego City School District, in partnership with SUNY Oswego, held its seventh annual Mentor-Scholar Community Dinner on Nov. 8 at Oswego High School as students from both the middle school and high school came together for a night of food, family fun and board games.
While students learned the importance of thanking a veteran for their service to their country, it was the veterans themselves who expressed gratitude to New Haven students and staff members for making them feel welcomed, appreciated and loved.
Family members or those who have supported students were invited to join Lanigan students for lunch at the cafés before students dispersed for recess as the adults received learning target information from Principal Jeff Hendrickson, School-Home Liaison Tammy Sheldon and Instructional Coach Jennifer Reese.
Six Phoenix Central School District student musicians recently demonstrated their talents during the annual Junior High Area All-State Music Festival. Held in Cortland, students from 46 school districts statewide participated in either treble choir, mixed chorus, orchestra or concert band.
An eager crowd of students and parents packed the Oswego High School cafeteria on Nov. 9 to get a first-hand look at some of the career opportunities awaiting them in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The STEM Career Exploration Night featured employees and hardware from Novelis, whose aluminum processing plant in Oswego employs more than 1,000 workers.
John C. Birdlebough High School students and staff members honored the nation’s bravest men and women by offering a special tribute in recognition of Veterans’ Day. Local military recruiters from various branches and members of the local VFW Post 5540 honor guard graced the stage, adjacent to the fallen soldier battle cross, as student Catherine Musumeci offered touching opening remarks.
The Credit Accrual and Recovery for Everyone (CARE) program at SUNY Oswego has done more for its high school participants than get their education back on track. Thanks to the new Mentor-Scholar component, young adults such as Oswego City School District student Devin Ball have broken out of their shells and excelled with personal goals.
New York Sea Grant has released a video highlighting the value of king salmon to the Lake Ontario ecosystem and local economies, and how Cornell University researchers and Sea Grant personnel are using pop-off satellite archival tags developed to work in freshwater to collect unprecedented data about salmon movement and behavior.
