Half-Shire Historical Society News

The society’s monthly lunch meeting was well attended with more than 44 guests on April 26. Erma Schroeder served up a terrific chicken casserole with a salad provided by Roberta Cleveland. While we dined in the main hall Roberta’s son, Mark Cleveland, was in the next rooms north pouring fresh concrete in the old boiler room and a portion of the Southwell memorial room.

Oswego Children’s Theater Announces Auditions for ‘Shrek the Musical’

The Oswego Children’s Theater will be hosting auditions for its next production, “Shrek the Musical,” on May 13 from 5 until 8 p.m. and May 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. with the first rehearsal scheduled for May 17 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. The auditions will be held at the New Haven Congregational Church, located on Route 104 East, between Oswego and Mexico.

Boat Capsizes in the Oswego River forcing 3 into Frigid Water

A small fishing boat with 3 people in it took on water today (April 27) and capsized in the Oswego River. The incident happened around noon, just north of the Bridge Street bridge as the boat maneuvered in the rapid currents of the river. Luckily, the 3 people in the water today were wearing lifevests and were able to get out of a dangerous situation unscathed, according to OFD.

Section 8 Rental Assistance Housing Choice Voucher Program and How Congressional Sequestration Hurts Oswego

The city of Oswego Community Development Office has administered a Section 8 Rental Assistance Program for Oswego’s low income renters since 1976. In 2013, the Congress implemented “sequestration cuts” that impacted rental assistance programs across the county, cutting more than 70,000 rental vouchers for families nationwide and exacerbating homelessness in America.

Children explore science, literacy and art at Bodley

There were a variety of options for the youth to explore at G. Ray Bodley High School during the school day, including literacy time, a physical education period, science adventures and art activities. In the art classroom, children created work using several mediums such as pastels, clay, beads and crayons.
