The Richard S. Shineman Foundation, a catalyst for change in Oswego County, has made a generous “champion” pledge of $50,000 to the Campaign to Save Whiskey Island and Northern Great Bear.
The Minetto United Methodist Church will host a free dinner on May 21, serving from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The menu will be ham, mashed potatoes, vegetable, bread, and dessert. Donations are not expected but will be accepted.
Elmira College released its Dean’s List for Academic Achievement for the winter 2017 term. The Dean’s List recognizes students that have a grade point average of 3.6 or higher.

Last week, I discovered four tiny kitten in my garage on one of those sunny days. I picked them up, brought them inside and called the Humane Society. They asked me a few questions, then they told me not to try to feed them and to return them to exactly where I found them and wait a few hours to see if the mother came back.
In keeping with SUNY Oswego’s support of faculty and undergraduate scholarship and creativity, the college’s Office of Provost recently announced 31 grants for faculty-student collaborative research and faculty studies and creative projects, plus four awards for faculty development of innovative courses.
The Fulton Polish Home will hold a Spring Fling Polka Dance on May 20, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Polish Home, 153 W. First St. S., in Fulton. Admission is free and music will be provided by Jasiu Klocek and the Salt City Brass.
The Fulton Public Library will feature a Night of Romance on May 11 from 5:30 – 7 p.m. Local authors will be attending the event, which includes a meet and greet and a book signing.
Incoming freshmen and their parents gathered in the Lockwood Auditorium for the annual transition night, which is designed to give students the knowledge and tools needed for a smooth transition from middle school to high school.
The statistics are startling. Nationally 1 in 10 children are sexually abused before their 18th birthday; youth represent 66% of all sexual offenses reported; and youth are 2.5 times more likely to be raped than adults. Oswego County is not immune to child abuse. It is a prevalent problem that affects hundreds of youth and their families.
