New Vision programs are competitive, rigorous one-year offerings designed for college-bound seniors. Programs exist in allied health, business, law and government and specialized careers.
The Minetto United Methodist Church will host a free dinner on October 23, serving from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The menu will be Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, bread, and dessert. Donations are not expected but will be accepted.
The Oswego Fair Housing Council announced the winners of its annual coloring contest. Community Bank, Pathfinder Bank, and Lighthouse Lanes all donated prizes for each of the winners.
St. James Episcopal Church, 24 Lake St., adjacent to the fire station, will host its first Indoor Fall Craft Fair and Chicken BBQ/Dinner” on October 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Oswego Opera Theater will present Mozart’s comic opera “The Marriage of Figaro” at 2 p.m. Nov. 13, in the newly renovated Waterman Theatre of SUNY Oswego’s Tyler Hall.
Principal Todd Terpening said the faculty recently came up with a new mission statement that puts the power of education directly into the hands of students: “Developing leaders by providing all students with what they need to succeed.”
The Oswego Sunrise Rotary Club, in collaboration with the Oswego County Humane Society and the Oswego High School Interact Club, is pleased to present Dinner and a Movie on October 22 at the Lake Ontario Event and Conference Center. This year’s film is the original Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and the event will feature Dr. Peter Ostrum, the actor who played “Charlie Bucket” in the 1971 film.
The most culturally diverse class ever to enter SUNY Oswego also comes to campus from farther outside the region: The class of 2020 includes nearly 300 freshmen from New York City, six from Washington, D.C., and scores of students from 14 other states and 18 countries. This fall’s enrollment of freshmen from Oswego and its six contiguous counties likely is the smallest ever, estimated at 248 among the 1,445 total freshmen.
Visitors will be off to see the Wizard, the season’s first hockey exhibition games, the planetarium, an artists’ reception at newly modernized Tyler Art Gallery and maybe even a splash-in showing of “Zootopia” — all at SUNY Oswego’s Family and Friends Weekend from Friday, Oct. 21, through Sunday, Oct. 23.
