Students at Fairgrieve Elementary School were announced as Expectation Experts for exhibiting the district’s behavioral expectations for the month of October. The students represented the four expectations: Be Safe; Be Respectful; Be Responsible; and Be a Problem Solver.

With a new location, CNY Arts Center kicks off a month-long slate of events to launch the new partnership with Cayuga Community College. Located in the River Glen Plaza on Route 481 South, in the former Fashion Bug retail store, CNY Arts Center hosts its first art show open to the public on November 15 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. and November 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Students in Martin Scoville’s Advanced Drawing and Painting classes at Sandy Creek High School took a recent field trip to Old Forge where they drew inspiration from nature. Prior to the field trip, the students studied the water colors of Winslow Homer, who worked in the Adirondack Mountains during a period of his life and painted many works during that time.

Of all the human services programs that United Way supports the ones with the most visible impact are those that address one of Oswego County’s most pressing needs…hunger. The need for food subsidy remains high as food pantries and nutrition services struggle to meet the demand. Under United Way’s strive to ensure basic needs for all they help fund four programs to reach results in their initiative to stop hunger.

It may surprise many people to learn that 25 percent of those who die every year in the United States are veterans. To help provide care and support that reflects the important contributions made by these men and women, Oswego County Hospice is a national partner of the We Honor Veterans program, and is a level 2 of the four level tiers.

November is Foundation Month within Rotary International. The foundation transforms monetary gifts into projects that change lives both close to home and around the world.

Local merchants and organizations will be hosting Hannibal’s annual Country Christmas celebration the weekend of November 22 and 23 at various locations in the town and village. Each participating location will be indicated by a red and white “Country Christmas” sign.

Although there has not been a major snowstorm to hit Oswego County yet this school year, students in Joe McNamara’s sixth grade class at Granby Elementary School have already gotten a heavy dose of lake effect flurries. TV meteorologist Jim Teske stopped by the school recently to teach the children about lake effect snow and the factors that come into play to produce major storms.
