Karen Goetz, new executive director of the Richard S. Shineman Foundation was a guest at a recent Oswego Rotary meeting. Ms. Goetz grew up in Oswego and graduated from Oswego High School.

“Girl Scouts is fun! There are so many opportunities available to girls through Girl Scouts,” said Ginger VanAllen, a Girl Scout with Troop 11013 from Central Square. When VanAllen decided she wanted to earn her Girl Scout Silver Award she knew a lot of older girls were dropping out of Girl Scouts to be involved with other activities. She knew she needed to make an impact on these girls.

The Minetto United Methodist Church will host a free dinner on October 26, serving from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The menu will be beef stew, mashed potatoes, cornbread, and dessert. Donations are not expected but will be accepted.

Students at Lanigan Elementary School took a step back in time during their recent visit to the John Wells Pratt House Museum in Fulton. The fourth graders learned a great deal about what life was like during the turn of the 19th century when the large house was occupied by the Pratt family.

ARISE, a non-profit organization that empowers people with disabilities to live fully and independently in the community, is celebrating its 10th anniversary of service in Pulaski this month. The agency will be holding a celebration open to the public at The Make Sense Shop, North Jefferson Street, on October 30 at 9:30 a.m.

SUNY Oswego is a partner in the first-ever AT&T Central New York Civic App Challenge, a “virtual hackathon” encouraging developers to solve local issues by building smartphone apps that serve Central New Yorkers. Winners will receive cash prizes totaling $18,000 under the challenge, which is facilitated by Hack Upstate and will run until Nov. 11. Under the leadership of Pastor Elyse Skiles, Journey of Faith United Methodist Church has been more than a year-long undertaking, formed from the merging of two previous United Methodist churches, Oswego Center UMC and Southwest Oswego UMC. Following the ribbon cutting, church members and guests from the community entered the church to share a worship service and hear congratulatory messages from pastors and invited dignitaries.
