Local merchants and organizations will be hosting Hannibal’s annual Country Christmas celebration the weekend of November 22 and 23 at various locations in the town and village. Each participating location will be indicated by a red and white “Country Christmas” sign.

Although there has not been a major snowstorm to hit Oswego County yet this school year, students in Joe McNamara’s sixth grade class at Granby Elementary School have already gotten a heavy dose of lake effect flurries. TV meteorologist Jim Teske stopped by the school recently to teach the children about lake effect snow and the factors that come into play to produce major storms.

Two teams from Oswego Speedway will be competing in the 15th annual Trinity Catholic School Spelling Bee on Friday at 7 p.m. at the American Foundry, 246 W. Seneca St. Tickets for the spelling bee are available for $10, which includes hors d’oeuvres, and desserts. A cash bar is available.

Fairgrieve Elementary School held its own elections recently selecting representatives from each class to serve on the school’s inaugural student council. Students applied for the privilege to run for office, stating why they thought they would be a good class representative and then created campaign posters to aid in their election.

U.S. Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand visited the Port of Oswego Oct. 27 to discuss her concerns about the spread of plastic microbeads in the Great Lakes. Plastic microbeads are found in personal care products like facial scrubs, body wash, and hand cleansers.

The United Way’s mission of ending hunger in Oswego County recently received a much-needed boost from the Oswego Lions Club. In support of United Way’s upcoming Stone Soup Luncheon the Oswego Lions Club presented United Way with a check for $1,500.

Oswego Players’ director Richard Mosher has announced his cast for the late November production of “The Lion In Winter.” Production dates are Nov. 28, 29 and Dec. 5, 6 with a matinee Dec. 7.

The United Baptist Church of Scriba, 5111 State Route 104E, will have a coffeehouse on November 7 from 7 to 9 p.m.

The Volney Elementary School gymnasium became a wax museum recently as inventors, past presidents, astronauts, celebrities, athletes and other historical figures were on display.
