Staff of the Oswego County Department of Social Services recently held a book, music and video sale to benefit United Way of Greater Oswego County. Held annually book sale is one of two benefits that DSS staff to augment their donations to United Way.

The Book Camp is to quickly get students back into the habit of reading “good-fit” books on a daily basis. Students read to younger school mates.

As the longest running national school-readiness program in the United States, more than 25 million children aged three through five have participated in Head Start since it began 47 years ago.

The Ladies Home is a 21-bed not-for-profit adult home for women located at 43 E. Utica St. in Oswego and was established in 1872. It strives to provide personal care and comfort for women who are no longer able to care for themselves at home but are not quite ready for a nursing home.

The challenge for the students was simple: read, read, read and keep a log of the reading that they do all summer long. In return, the teachers promised to take a few pies to the face during a school-wide assembly at the start of the 2012-2013 school year.

School Principal Bob Briggs presented the role model students with certificates during a PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) character education assembly that took place at the school on September 28.

A Zumbathon charity event will be held at the Fulton Family YMCA on Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. until noon benefiting Susan G. Koman “For the Cure.” All proceeds will be donated to fund breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment programs.

Jim Jones, director of Oswego County Emergency Medical Services, recently spoke to the Fulton Noon Rotary Club about the services currently being provided in Oswego County.

The walk is organized by the Central New York Chapter of the American Federation of Suicide Prevention, which raises awareness through education, research and outreach.
