Summer Program Supports Inner City Teens in Science

Tolga Hayali of the Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School and SUNY Oswego President Deborah F. Stanley on Dec. 4 signed an agreement between their institutions to engage high school students in a residential summer immersion program in the sciences on the Oswego campus. With them for the formal signing ceremony were two SAS students who were in a pilot version of the program last summer, Faith Britt and Catherine Graham, and Oswego chemistry professor Fehmi Damkaci. The three are also on the cover of the winter issue of the college's alumni magazine, Oswego. SUNY Oswego and the Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School have begun a partnership designed to help pave the way to careers in science fields for inner-city teens.

Dr. Fehmi Damkaci, assistant professor of chemistry at Oswego, piloted the program in July with four students from the academy.
