Sandra Scott Travels: Shanghai Is A Pleasurable Experience Today

Today, I think people would love to be shanghaied as Shanghai, China, is truly amazing. But, back in the 1800s, most adventurers were heading to the west coast of America, especially the gold fields of California.
The practice of Shanghaiing was prevalent in San Francisco, California; and Portland, Oregon. Shanghai is the largest city in China and ranks as one of the largest in the world depending on how you define “city.”

SUNY Oswego’s ‘Circle Mirror Transformation’ Probes Games, Emotions

SUNY Oswego’s spring honors production, “Circle Mirror Transformation,” will key on emotions-exposing games within an acting class within the play, as it runs the last weekend in February and the first weekend in March in Hewitt Union’s lab theater. Written by Annie Baker and first performed off-Broadway in 2009, the Obie-winning play will preview at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 26, and run at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 27 and 28 and March 6 and 7, with a finale at 2 p.m. March 8. All performances are in the “black box” theater across the union’s lobby from the ballroom.

Sandra Scott Travels: Presidential Sites Abound In New York State

Celebrate President’s Day with a visit to a presidential site. In the quiet little town of East Aurora, which ironically is west of Aurora, NY, is the law office of Millard Fillmore, the nation’s 13th president. The small 1825 building has been restored to that era and includes some of the original Fillmore furniture. Fillmore was born in a log cabin in Summerhill, NY.

The British vocal trio Voice will bring music for the Valentine’s season to Sheldon Hall ballroom at SUNY Oswego at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 18. Jointly hosted by the college’s Artswego Performing Arts Series and the Ke-nekt Chamber Music Series, the program features seven centuries of songs about the beauty, heartache and humor of love. Titled “If Music Be the Food of Love,” the evening will feature compositions and folk material from the Middle Ages through the era of Shakespeare.

Sandra Scott Travels: Zoo Treks Offer A Glimpse Of Wildlife

I, like many people, enjoy seeing animals in their natural habitat and have done so in many places. John and I went on safari in Kenya where we saw thousands of wildebeests and zebras migrating. I was most impressed with the height of the giraffes. When I tell people that we have spent a lot of time over the years in the rainforest I always add that we have more wildlife in our backyard than we ever saw in the jungle. The best place to really see and observe animals is in a zoo.

Fulton Community Theatre Announces 25th Anniversary Season

A combination of comedies, drama, and music, both new and old will come together on stage in Fulton in 2015 as part of Fulton Community Theatre’s 25th anniversary season. The 501(c)3 not-for-profit theatrical company, which produced its first offering in the summer of 1990, is celebrating is 25th year with a line-up of six mainstage shows, two special events, as well as helping to bring a second summer Shakespeare event to Fulton. “It’s a combination of some of our favorite productions, along with some new pieces that we believe our audiences will enjoy,” said FCT artistic director William Edward White.

Sandra Scott Travels: Enjoy The Great Flavor Of Haiti

I am always impressed with how hospitable people are – worldwide. This was the case when we were in Haiti. It is an interesting destination, but it is not on many travelers’ radar. In the 1700s, Haiti was the glory of the French colonies and one of the richest colonies in the world. In 1804, Haiti became the first black independent nation. Over the years, poor leadership and other issues caused economic troubles from which Haiti has never fully recovered. I had expected beaches and I was not disappointed.
