the Rosamond Gifford Zoo.It had been several years since I had visited the Rosamond Gifford Zoo. I felt that it was a place to take youngsters. And, yes, it was a beautiful day and there were many adults with children who were thrilled and amazed by the animals. But, there were many adults especially those interested in photography.

I enjoyed the visit because it brought to mind some of my travels.

SUNY Oswego to present puppet wizardry of Cashore Marionettes

The Cashore Marionettes, featuring a cast of puppets that includes violinist "Maestro Zelinka," will come alive Sept. 7 at SUNY Oswego under the masterful fingers of Joseph Cashore and the evocative music of composers such as Vivaldi and Copland. A 2 p.m. family matinee and 7:30 p.m. performance oriented toward adults will take the stage at Waterman Theatre. (Photo by Matt Cashore)Master puppeteer Joseph Cashore brings his lifelike creations to SUNY Oswego’s Waterman Theatre on Sept. 7, for performances at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., launching the college’s 2013-14 Artswego Performing Arts Series. In addition, informative programs by the artist are scheduled in three area communities as part of an extended residency. While the Cashore Marionettes are complex in construction, the veteran puppeteer aims for effects that are stunning in their simplicity.

Gerrit Smith was one of the New York States’ strongest supporters of the abolitionist movement. Smith is just one of the many people who helped slaves get their freedom. Actually, Smith purchased some slaves and then freed them. Smith was a close friend of Frederick Douglass, the African American who, after his escape from slavery, became a leader in the abolitionist movement and an advocate of other social reforms.

Rehearsals are well under way for Woody Allen’s play, “Don’t Drink the Water” on the Frances Marion Brown stage. The farce, directed by Sherri Lynn Metz, appeared on Broadway November 7, 1966, and played for 598 performances at three different Broadway theatres. It was Allen’s first professionally produced venture. The original cast included such notables as Lou Jacobi, Kay Medford, Anita Gillette, Tony Roberts and Donna Mills.

Michael Jackson’s signature gloveOnce called the “Mistake on the Lake,” Cleveland is now the “Remake on the Lake.” I love Cleveland and so do music lovers. After all it is the city that gave birth to the name “Rock & Roll.” No matter your music preference you will find a place to keep the beat going. The musical term “Rock ‘N Roll” came from disc jockey, Alan Freed, who used the term to describe the upbeat rhythm & blues records he played on WJW, a Cleveland radio station.
