We’ve talked about this last fall and in prior years. But, we still get questions about dogs left out in the cold. So it never hurts to repeat ourselves. THE COLD IS HERE. And it never hurts to repeat ourselves – so we want to remind dog owners and dog lovers of the New York statute about shelter for dogs.
Dori has one of those back stories that makes you sort of, what’s the word . . . furious. She was abandoned in the Tops parking lot in Pulaski and was trying desperately to get into anyone’s car so she could get to a safe place to have her – yes, you guessed it – four babies, just two days later.
We have been thinking lately about how we, as the spokesanimals for a small animal welfare non-profit in a small rural county in Upstate New York, fit into the larger scheme of things – when there is so much hatred and misery in the world and when it seems that people everywhere are so angry about so much.
We have talked about Miley before, but she is still here and still needs a home of her own. She was found wandering the streets of Fulton, hungry, a little beaten up by other meaner cats, but totally intent on finding a person to pick her up and keep her safe.
A couple of weeks ago we talked to you about Service Dogs, what they are, what they do, their legal rights, and how that designation is sometimes abused. We expressed our general annoyance at people who abuse this important service with phony “credentials.” There are other categories of “helping” animals that you should also know about, emotional support animals and therapy animals. They are very different, but the problems with them are similar.
We’ve said this before, but there is no problem with saying it again! This is the time of year that we used to issue warnings about all the horrible things that can happen to your pets over the holidays. If it’s not poinsettias to worry about (which it is not) then it’s mistletoe (which it is) or chocolate, or grapes or tinsel (yes to all).
