February is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. According to national statistics, one in three teens in the US experiences physical, emotional, or sexual abuse from a dating partner. Nearly half of teens who experience dating violence report that incidents of abuse took place in a school building or on school grounds.
New York State Tobacco Control Programs has been proven to reduce youth smoking and help current smokers quit, which saves lives and millions of state tax dollars. However, higher rates of smoking persist among individuals with less than a high school education (22.4%), income less than $25,000 a year (22.2%) and those with poor mental health (27.2%).

Boaters who were without power last season at the city’s marinas will be seeing a refund. The city turned off the power to the docks for a period of time in 2017 for safety reasons during the high water. At Monday night’s Administrative Services Committee, Thomas Kells, DPW Commissioner, requested a $100 refund for boaters who docked at the city operated marinas during the 2017 season and were without power because of safety reasons.
The Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor today (Feb. 6) released results from a recently-commissioned study about current and prospective visitors to the 500-mile Canalway Corridor.
The information is intended to help tourism promoters, businesses and heritage sites better attract and serve visitors, including boaters, cyclists, sightseers and vacationers.
Excitement is building for one of Oswego’s most anticipated events, the Child Advocacy Center of Oswego County Annual Wing Fest. Hosted by the Lake Ontario Event and Conference Center, East First Street in Oswego, the CAC Wing Fest gets under way this Friday, February 9, at 5 p.m. with an Attitude Adjustment Hour followed by the main event beginning at 6 p.m.
The Oswego City-County Youth Bureau and the Oswego Kiwanis Club will host a Kids Paint and Pizza Night at Lombardo’s Bridie Manor at 6:30 p.m. March 9. The event is geared for kids ages 3 to 12 and is open to the first 35 children to register.
The Oswego Players will host auditions for the comedy “An Act of God,” by David Javerbaum, on February 18 from 2 – 4 p.m. at the Frances Marion Brown Theater in Oswego. The auditions, for a cast of three, are open to adult men and women 35 +, who will be asked to read from script.
Blessings in a Backpack in Oswego continues its work feeding 250 children in Oswego’s five elementary schools over weekends and school breaks thanks in part to an $8,000 grant for 2018 from the Richard S. Shineman Foundation.
Lilo and Stitch are sister and brother. They love each other so much, they have made a formal request to be adopted together! Stitch is a gorgeous all-black kitten who is as playful and rambunctious as can be. Lilo is a curious, black and white cow-spotted beauty.
