The community is invited to an open skate with the Oswego State men’s and women’s hockey teams for Holiday Skate with the Lakers, 1 to 3 p.m. Dec. 10, in Marano Campus Center arena to benefit the local United Way. The annual event will feature holiday music, a visit by Santa Claus, a hockey jersey raffle and concessions provided by Auxiliary Services. Laker hockey players will skate with participants and provide autographs.

Church To Hold Arts, Crafts Fair

The First United Methodist Church of Fulton will hold its annual Holiday Arts and Crafts Fair on Saturday, November 25, in its Fellowship Hall. The event will run from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. and will feature artists, craftspeople and local vendors from the Central New York area.

How Lake Ontario’s Shape Generates Local, Persistent Snowstorms

Researchers, including the University of Utah’s Jim Steenburgh and University of Wyoming’s Bart Geerts, have now found that these intense snowstorms are fueled by a well-organized air circulation driven by the heat released by the lake, and that the shape of Lake Ontario affects the formation and location of this circulation, and thus the heaviest lake-effect snow.

County Legislature Launches Red Kettle Season

The Oswego County Legislature’s Human Services Committee presented a certificate to officers and board members of the Oswego County Salvation Army Advisory Board in recognition of the group’s annual Red Kettle Campaign.

Acclaimed Jazz Drummer To Lead Quartet In Ke-Nekt Concert Nov. 29

Globally accomplished jazz drummer Matt Wilson will bring his Matt Wilson Quartet to SUNY Oswego for a Ke-Nekt Chamber Music Series concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 29, in Sheldon Hall ballroom. Chris Lightcap on bass, Jeff Lederer on saxophone/clarinet and Kirk Knuffke on cornet will join Wilson. SUNY Oswego music faculty member Eric Schmitz, host for the event, will give a pre-concert talk at 7 p.m.

Catholic Charities Hosts Open House, Welcomes Bishop Cunningham, Many Visitors

Catholic Charities of Oswego County hosted an open house Nov. 9 that featured a blessing by Most Rev. Robert J. Cunningham, Bishop of the Diocese of Syracuse, a ribbon cutting, and a throng of visitors curious to see the new location. Mary-Margaret Pekow, executive director, said, “The turnout was heartwarming, and our staff was extremely proud to host tours and show off out beautiful new facility.”

College’s Planetarium To Detail ‘Stars Of Winter’ In December Shows

The planetarium’s director, Dr. Scott Roby of the college’s physics department, will point out the bright stars and constellations visible in early winter evenings and give a lighthearted version of some of the mythological tales behind the constellations.

Boniface Career Planning Fund Provides Opportunities For SUNY Oswego Students

Hundreds of SUNY Oswego students have explored a variety of career fields, networked with professionals, toured facilities and developed new connections with each other, faculty, employers and alumni, thanks to the Boniface Unendowed Career Planning Student Fund. The fund, established by 1992 SUNY Oswego alumni Thomas Jr. and Maria Parengkuan Boniface, has enabled the college’s Office of Career Services to host a wide variety of industry-specific events and opportunities.
