Fairgrieve Elementary Universal Pre-Kindergarten students received a little help from “Sesame Street” characters in reviewing fire safety. Elmo, Oscar the Grouch and Cookie Monster all made guest appearances to the school, along with their new friend Mr. Smoke Detector during a puppet show performance, thanks to members of the Fulton Fire Department.
Learning is fun in Diane Bush’s Spanish 5 class at Mexico High School. The students recently studied about the Day of the Dead in various South American countries and learned the annual event on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2 is a cultural tradition to remember and celebrate the lives of lost loved ones.
The Oswego Housing Development Council has selected Dennis Merlino and Patrick Waite to its board of directors in a unanimous vote at its annual October meeting. Both Merlino and Waite had been members of the council prior to their promotion to directors.
The Charles E. Riley Home and School Community Fair, scheduled for November 18 at the school from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., continues to grow with additional community organizations, vendors and generous donations for raffle baskets to raise funds to enhance the students’ experiences. CER Home and School Association event organizer Laura Ruggio said, “I am overwhelmed by the interest in our first community fair. We are hoping that this family event will even grow more than it already has.”
Leadership Oswego County (LOC), an annual leadership development program administered by SUNY Oswego’s Office of Business and Community Relations, was awarded a $5,000 grant from the Richard S. Shineman Foundation to expand and enhance programming for the 2017-18 program.
The Oswego Elks Lodge and Vashaw’s Collision Service will sponsor Continental Arms Collectors Association’s Military and Naval Exhibit at the annual Oswego Elks Veterans Dinner on November 10. Located at 132 W. Fifth St., the display will be on view from 5 to 7 p.m. Exhibitors will include Fort Ontario State Historic Site, Larry Ruth, George Clark and CACA Revolutionary War Interpretive Unit.
Sandy Creek High School students won’t soon forget a recent chemistry class that demonstrated scientific concepts of dehydration, combustion, decomposition and redox. Following appropriate safety procedures, students volunteered to hold bubbles lit on fire and not get burned.
Two-thirds of home fire deaths result from fires in homes without working smoke alarms, according to the National Fire Protection Agency. The city of Oswego reminds you to not only change your clocks for Daylight Savings, but to also check your smoke and Carbon Monoxide alarms and change the batteries.
Friends of Fulton Parks and Oswego County Opportunities’ IMPACT Program sponsored a Healthy Halloween Hike Saturday, October 28, to celebrate their newly marked Oswego River Pathfinder Trail in Fulton. Participants were invited to walk the trail and healthy Halloween treats were provided. More than 70 people were in attendance.
November is National Hospice Month and to commemorate this and support Oswego County Hospice patients and their families, three local restaurants will host their annual “Hospicetality” Day. Canale’s kicks off the events on November 6 during lunch and dinner.
