Students at several elementary schools have been collecting items in an effort to aid those affected by severe weather in recent weeks, stockpiling non-perishable food, personal hygiene items and bottled water for delivery to people in need.
“This forum is a great opportunity to learn about youth programming in Oswego County and for the public to gather information on what’s happening,” said Brian Chetney, executive director of the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau.
Mexico Middle School seventh graders have taken real-world problems and used their ingenuity, determination and teamwork to create solutions. That occurred in the students’ technology class with teacher David Wilcox, who presented the students with a foot orthosis instant design challenge.
The Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center will present a public program on trees. Tales of the Trees will be held on October 29 at 2 p.m. Participants will enjoy a walk through the woodlands with naturalist Pat Carney, to delight in the colors and beauty of the forest trees dressed in their autumn finery.
Students got the project started recently by interviewing residents at St. Francis Commons as part of a multi-semester class project that focuses on the development and implementation of evidence-based health promotion programs designed specifically for older adults.

Oswego Health, along with area healthcare providers, invite area community members for a night of health, wellness and fun with friends on October 17, as a panel of experts discuss the symptoms, screenings and treatments available for breast and ovarian cancers. This Healthy You event begins at 6 p.m. at GS Steamers Restaurant on East First Street in Oswego.
Artist Bert Leighton is being featured as Artist of the Month for October at the Riverside Artisans Cooperative. Bert, a retired elementary school teacher who lives in Oswego, has studied art with nationally known watercolor teachers in numerous workshops from Maine to Florida.
The Phoenix Central School District recently named Michael Aiken its new director of facilities. Aiken has been serving school districts for 16 years in different capacities.
The Literacy Coalition of Oswego County will host a free literacy event, “Build a Better World,” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Oct. 21, at Michael A. Maroun Elementary School, 11 Elm St., Phoenix. “This is our seventh annual event stimulating children and families to become more avid readers,” Carri Waloven, co-chair, said.
