Summer Celebration Held For Fulton Junior High Extended Year Program Participants
Held from July 10 to Aug. 4 at Granby Elementary School, the summer program engaged sixth, seventh and eighth grade students in project-based math, science and humanities classes to help them master grade-level standards. With the “Life Lab: Growing Minds, Building Community” program theme, students engaged in deeper connections to their peers, teachers and community.

Fulton’s ‘Music Man,’ Swierczek, Returns To Conduct Community Band
Richard Swierczek, former director of music for the Fulton City School District, will return to conduct several numbers with the Fulton Community Band at its 7 p.m. Aug. 24 concert, at Bullhead Point. Swierczek and his family relocated to Chatham, Mass., following his retirement from teaching in 1983.

Some cosmetic makers still test their ingredients on rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, and rats, forcing substances down their throats and applying them to the eyes or skin of test animals. Often, the testing protocols do not require pain relief and animals suffer terribly The Humane Cosmetics Act (H.R. 2790), sponsored by United States Representatives Martha McSally (R-AZ), Don Beyer (D-VA), Ed Royce (R-CA), Tony Cárdenas (D-CA), Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ) and Paul D. Tonko (D-NY), will end this unnecessary cruelty by prohibiting animal testing for all cosmetic products manufactured or sold in the U.S.

August Artist of the Month Announced
Stained glass artist Cathy Pence is being featured as Artist of the Month for August at the Riverside Artisans Cooperative. According to Pence, “Working with art glass offers me unlimited opportunities for creating designs. I make stained glass panels as large as windows and as small as sun catchers that accent a window.”

Oswego Health welcomes Orthopedic Surgeon Glenn Axelrod, of Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists, who will begin providing surgery and office visits at the health system’s Oswego Health Services Center. Dr. Axelrod is a well-known, board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, joint replacements, arthroscopic and open shoulder surgery and general orthopedics.

A new school year is filled with potential, a chance to start new routines and habits, build new friendships and discover new possibilities and interests. It’s an exciting time for many kids. However, at the end of the school day, 11.3 million kids head to homes where they are unsupervised form 3 to 6 p.m. according to Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit public awareness organization.

The epidemic of addiction continues to rise and more prevention education is greatly needed, along with treatment options, alternatives, and hope for recovery. The Opioid crisis has contributed to the overdose death rates and suicide rates skyrocketing in Oswego County. Families and friends are in a unique position to help their loved ones through their addiction recovery and could benefit from additional resources to help.
