The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation will hold its 20th annual Salmon River Hatchery Open House and Family Day on Sept. 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is being held in conjunction with the celebration of “National Hunting and Fishing Day.”
Kindergarteners joined their peers and teachers in classrooms, where they listened to stories, made new friends, learned classroom and hallway expectations and became familiar with their new learning environment.
This year marks acclaimed folk–rock duo Aztec Two-Step’s 45th anniversary. Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman, who met at a Boston coffeehouse open mic in 1971, will be commemorating this amazing milestone with special shows throughout the year. October 8 at 7:30 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. at Oswego Music Hall, McCrobie Building, 41 Lake St., the duo will perform original songs from their 45-year collaboration.
On September 18, a pancake breakfast will be held at Lake City Lodge 127, 765 E. Seneca St. Serving will be from 8 a.m. until noon.
The Central Square School District recently welcomed its newest Redhawks during Universal Pre-K orientation events at each elementary school.

A.A. Cole Elementary School proudly celebrated the red, white and blue during its Patriot Day celebration on Sept. 12. Fourth graders marched into the gymnasium as they presented the country’s colors and several flags reflective of first responders’ heroic efforts during the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
Warren St. John, author of 2015-16 Oswego Reading Initiative selection “Outcasts United: An American Town, a Refugee Team and One Woman’s Quest to Make a Difference,” will give a free public talk at SUNY Oswego at 7 p.m. Sept. 28, in Sheldon Hall ballroom.
The Oswego YMCA will offer an after-school Youth Fit & Performance program every Tuesday and Thursday through November 22. The after-school athletic training opportunity for kids starts October 4. There will be two training groups for various age groups.
Oswego will host its second annual “PorchFest” on September 25, from 1-5 p.m. in the historic districts of West/Franklin and Montcalm parks. This is a family-friendly community building event where last year 800+ people enjoyed strolling through the historic neighborhoods and listening to a variety of music in an open-air setting.
