Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

The Sandy Creek Central School High School Concert Band under the direction of Thomas Artini was awarded a “Gold Medal With Distinction” at the NYSSMA Major Organizations Festival In Fulton.

As a way to learn the true meaning of Veterans Day, three local vets spoke before a select amount of students in the high school’s auditorium, sharing military experiences and the difficulties they had acclimating back into the civilian lifestyle.

A group of Fitzhugh Park Elementary School students simply wanted to use arts and crafts to help to others. Last year, sixth graders Alyssa Searor and Maddy Graham came up with the idea of doing something you enjoy, like making crafts and then finding a way to help others benefit from these efforts. With the guidance of their teacher, Christine Haessig, a group “Crafting for the Cure” was formed and a goal was made.

Inspired by Google Corporation’s initiative to inspire creativity where employees are given 20% of their workweek over to inspiration, the Sandy Creek 12th grade English department decided to provide a similar opportunity for its students. The 20-time project allows students 20% of their class time to work on and explore one topic of their choice.

The H. Lee White Maritime Museum has announced that the Columbus Foundation replica tall ships Nina and Pinta visit to Oswego has been cancelled. “Unfortunately, the ships will not be able to visit the historic port of Oswego this June due to construction work under way on the Oswego breakwall and the required staging on the west pier,” said Mercedes Niess, the museum’s executive director.

Hundreds of G. Ray Bodley High School students were recently honored for scholastic excellence during the 33rd annual academic awards ceremony held in the school auditorium. Teachers, family and friends gathered to recognize scholarship recipients, academic award-winners and other honorees.
