Columbia Silver Award to OHS Yearbook

Current editor Lauren Peel (right) and 2013-2014 editor Brooke Broadwell (left) join Chrissy Abare (center) to display the national awards received at the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Conference held in New York City recently. They are flanked by advisors Warren Shaw and Chris Mangano. The award winning  2012 edition of the Paradox was recognized as a silver level book, ranking it among the top 20% nationally and Chrissy was awarded three certificates for her artwork and photography.The Oswego High School Yearbook Club was recently recognized for the quality of the 2012 production of “The Paradox.” Yearbook team members traveled to New York City to attend classes and seminars at Columbia University related to yearbook production, graphic design and journalism. The Paradox was awarded a Silver level recognition.

Two Cayuga students receive SUNY Chancellor’s Awards

In early April, SUNY of New York Chancellor Nancy Zimpher honored two Cayuga Community College students (Faith Fanning ’13 of Waterloo, NY, and Brian Knapp ’13 of Fleming, NY,) with the 2013 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. In recognition of this highest recognition by the SUNY system, Fanning and Knapp have each been invited to speak at the 59th Annual Cayuga Community College Commencement ceremony.

Port City Roller Derby Gears Up For Third Season

Competing its first two years as Oz Roller Girls, PCRD’s Breakwall Bombshells will kick off its season May 25 hosting the Roc City Roller Derby B-Sides. The veteran Rochester team won the only meeting between the leagues last season in a 205-188 thriller. On June 15, Port City will host the Albany All-Stars Roller Derby A Team. Oz topped Albany’s A squad twice last year in two exciting bouts, 204-162 in Albany, and 219-173 at home.
