Oswego County Fire Coordinator Reminds Residents of State Burn Ban

Oswego County Fire Coordinator Donald Forbes reminds county residents of the annual statewide ban on all open burning which is in effect across New York State during the high fire-risk period of March 16 through May 14. “Even as snow continues to fall, spring is not far away. OHS Senior Emily Bradshaw spoke directly to her classmates and asked them to “stand together, not divided.” “We’re asking you to walk up, not walk out,” Bradshaw said. “Walk up to that person who is sitting alone, walk up and compliment someone you don’t know very well, walk up and thank someone who has helped you. The world is scary and filled with a lot of hate so I challenge you to walk up.”

Oswego County Legislature Extends Gradual Tax Exemption for Home Improvements

The Oswego County Legislature has extended a partial tax exemption to homeowners who make capital improvements of $5,000 or more on their residences. The exemption is limited to $80,000 in increased assessed value, based on the increased market value due to reconstruction or improvement projects. First adopted in 2015, the Legislature voted Thursday, March 15, to extend the home improvement exemption until 2028.

Oswego Gears Up For Paving Season

At Monday night’s Common Council meeting, the Purchasing Agent was authorized to seek bids for the 2018 Paving Project. The $827,350 plan includes some of the Port City’s major streets and high traffic areas. The city will purchase a machine designed to move quickly throughout city streets, with minimal personnel required, to patch potholes and address worn areas, the mayor said.

Councilor: Local Law An Opportunity For Neighbors To Help Neighbors

The Common Council approved Local Law #1 of 2018 on Monday night. The law aggressively increases the enforcement, fines and penalties for property maintenance issues such as tall grass, un-shoveled sidewalks, exposed garbage and the tidiness of property visible from city streets. If you snowblow in front of your house, why not go a few more feet and clear in front of your neighbor’s? the council president asked rhetorically. “If you get people on board to try to make the city better … this could be the start of something pretty nice,” he said.
