Mayor Barlow proposes stricter property maintenance rules in Oswego

Mayor Billy Barlow announced today (Feb. 15) a proposed local law he will bring to the Oswego Common Council for consideration. He proposes to aggressively increase the enforcement, fines and penalties for property maintenance issues such as tall grass, un-shoveled sidewalks, exposed garbage and the tidiness of property visible from city streets. He will also request funding for an additional code enforcer position in the code enforcement department.

Counseling and Healing Arts provides mental health counseling as well as holistic health care. Open since 2015 in Fulton, it recently expanded its office to include The Healing Arts Studio. “This is an actual studio. It is not in a gym setting. The third floor is entirely dedicated to a calm and serene place to be. When we have our classes, Yoga, Meditation and Taiji, it is quiet and calming. People come here to experience that and that’s what we aim to provide,” the office manager explained.

Warm Spell Melts Plans For Snowman Event

The Oswego City-County Youth Bureau’s Jen Losurdo was looking to create free and fun entertainment for the children of Oswego. All she needed was some snow – a lot of it. Unfortunately, it appears Mother Nature has conspired against her. They have cancelled the Feb. 24 contest and are looking to hold a bowling event on Feb. 23.

Oswego Man Pleads Guilty In Cayuga County Court

48-year-old Timothy Oleyourryk, of State Route 104A, Oswego, plead guilty this afternoon (Feb. 14) in Cayuga County Court. before Judge Mark H. Fandrich, to Leaving the Scene of Personal Injury Accident Without Reporting to Police, a Class A Misdemeanor. On December 10, 2016, at approximately 10 p.m., Oleyourryk was operating a 2011 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD extended cab pickup truck, equipped with a V-Plow on it, in a northeasterly direction on Old State Road in the town of Sterling during a severe lake effect snowstorm when he struck an intoxicated 19-year-old man who was walking home (in the road) from a friend’s house.

Oswego St. Baldrick’s Event Seeks Volunteers To Go Bald to Support Childhood Cancer Research

More than 100 “shavees” are expected to shave their heads to raise money for lifesaving childhood cancer research, Dan Witmer, event organizer, told Oswego County Today. Every two minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer worldwide. And, in the U.S. one in five kids diagnosed won’t survive. Those who do survive often suffer long-term effects from treatments too harsh for their developing bodies.

Vacant Oswego House Damaged By Fire

UPDATE: West Bridge Street remains closed between West Eighth Street and Liberty Street. Crews are working to reopen the street soon.
Firefighters responded to a fire at a vacant house on West Bridge Street, between Lathrop and Northwest Ninth streets, early this morning (Feb. 11). There was some major damage to the roof and second floor of the structure. No injuries have been reported.
