“We wanted to give back to the community not only by building more habitats but also by educating local children and giving them the opportunity to assist,” said Jeanne Robideau, environmental chemist and chair of the station Environmental Stewardship Committee. “We’re looking forward to expanding our efforts moving forward.”

The Oswego Common Council sailed through a relatively light agenda Monday night. However, the item receiving most of the comments wasn’t on the agenda. During the public session, three speakers stepped to the microphone to voice their opposition to a proposed Dunkin’ Donuts in downtown.

More than 100 “shavees” are expected to shave their heads to raise money for lifesaving childhood cancer research, Dan Witmer, event organizer, told Oswego County Today. Every two minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer worldwide. And, in the U.S. one in five kids diagnosed won’t survive. Those who do survive often suffer long-term effects from treatments too harsh for their developing bodies.

UPDATE: West Bridge Street remains closed between West Eighth Street and Liberty Street. Crews are working to reopen the street soon.
Firefighters responded to a fire at a vacant house on West Bridge Street, between Lathrop and Northwest Ninth streets, early this morning (Feb. 11). There was some major damage to the roof and second floor of the structure. No injuries have been reported.

At 3:05 a.m. today (Feb. 9), John Collett III, 60, of 3640 SR 3, Fulton, was arrested for first-degree sexual abuse, a class D felony; second-degree course of sexual conduct against a child, a class D felony; and endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor.

The arrest stems from the investigation into incidents that occurred between late summer/early fall of 2008 and May 2009 at a town of Granby address. He allegedly engaged in numerous encounters of sexual contact with two separate victims, both being less than 11 years of age.
