Schumer: Bipartisan Funding Bill Is ‘A Major Win For New York State’

On a conference call today (Feb. 7) with reporters, U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer announced that he successfully negotiated a bipartisan and historic agreement that will significantly increase federal investments on key priorities for New York State. As the Senate Democratic Leader, Schumer led the effort in securing an increase in funds for programs that will help middle-class New Yorkers, all the way from upstate Buffalo to the east end of Long Island.

County Sees Sharp Increase In Flu Cases

More than 500 lab-confirmed cases of the flu have been reported in Oswego County this year. The week of Jan. 29 saw a 57 percent increase in the number of reported cases of flu, compared to the previous week. Regional hospitals have reported that two older Oswego County residents have died from complications from the flu. Both individuals had been vaccinated for the flu and had other health complications. A third resident, who had not been vaccinated, is hospitalized in critical condition.

Port City’s Plan To Assist Home Improvements Moves Forward

At Monday night’s Administrative Services Committee meeting, Mayor Billy Barlow requested consideration by the Common Council in approving the Office of Economic Development to prepare and submit a grant application for $500,000 to the New York State Affordable Housing Corporation for the Oswego Home Improvement Program. This program will provide financial assistance to existing owner-occupied one- to four-unit family homes, the mayor explained.

Workforce NY Career Center Helps Business Keep On Trucking

Commercial truck drivers are in urgent demand in Oswego County. Because of the shortage of qualified licensed commercial drivers, the Oswego County Workforce New York office is working closely with local companies to recruit and help train people to fill vacant positions. Although some drivers still spend “six days on the road” as described in the classic song, working conditions for commercial truck drivers have improved significantly over the past several years.

Vehicle Pulled From Lake Ontario

According to the Oswego Fire Department, an adult male was hospitalized after an overnight incident at Wright’s Landing in Oswego. According to officials, the driver of a white Volkswagen drove out about 100 yards onto the ice at Wright’s Landing sometime before 5 a.m., when the vehicle fell through and sank. The victim was able to get himself out of the water, and was transported to the hospital for evaluation.
