Oswego County Holds Highest Childhood Obesity Rate In State

Oswego County has the highest rate of childhood obesity in New York State and the adult obesity trends are higher county wide than state wide, according to the county health department. “In Oswego, 33.8 percent of adults are overweight or obese, compared to the New York state average of 24.6 percent,” said Senior Public Health Educator Diane Oldenburg.

Cold Case Tuesday: The New York State Police continue to investigate a missing persons case from 1997

The New York State Police continue to investigate the missing person case of 62-year-old John Sapienza. Sapienza has been missing since February 24, 1997, from St. Johnsville, NY. A friend reported him missing on February 27 after receiving a phone call from Sapienza’s wife that his vehicle was found abandoned in a grocery store parking lot in New Hartford, NY. A manager confirmed the van had been there for about four weeks.

Oswego Crowns Its Great Pumpkin Champ For 2017

Last year Chad Tucker placed third with a 1,381.0-pound entry. This year, the Brushton, NY, resident’s entry was only 1,135.5 pounds. However it was huge enough to claim top honors at the 2017 edition of Oswego’s Great Pumpkin Fest. “I have been growing great pumpkins for five years now,” he told Oswego County Today. “It’s my second time here in Oswego.”

Oswego Man Charged With Assault

On Oct. 1 at approximately 10:07 a.m., the Oswego City Police Department responded with Oswego City Fire Department ambulance to 128 E Fourth St. in the city of Oswego in regard to an unresponsive, 55-year-old female. Jason A. Golas was charged. As of the time of this release, the victim remains hospitalized with serious injuries.

Suicide Awareness Event Draws Big Crowd To Help SAVE Lives

As the crowd fell silent Saturday (Sept. 30), the only thing that could be heard was the ringing of a bell after each name of a community member lost to suicide was read. A chill in the air didn’t prevent 778 community members from gathering at SUNY Oswego’s Hewitt Union for CNY’s seventh annual Stride to SAVE Lives event. SAVE’s new campaign – “Hope. It saves lives,” reflects the common goal of prevention and spreading positivity.

Zonta Club of Oswego is brewing up some scary fun with its inaugural “Witches Ball.” To be held October 27 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the American Foundry in Oswego, the “Witches Ball” offers an evening of Halloween fun for great cause. In recognition of October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month the Zonta Club of Oswego “Witches Ball” serves as a fundraiser for Oswego County Opportunities’ Services to Aid Families program, the domestic violence and rape crisis program for Oswego County.
