Board, Public View New Office Renovation Work

The Oswego school board and audience members at Tuesday’s meeting were treated to a tour of the section of Leighton Elementary that will soon be home to the district offices. The northeast wing of the school is currently undergoing a renaissance from elementary classrooms to administrative offices and meeting space. “The main entrance will be on the north end of that wing,” Superintendent Dr. Dean Goewey said. “The main entrance faces Liberty Street.” The offices will be ready by the opening of the 2017-18 school year, he added optimistically.

State Police investigating car/pedestrian crash in Lysander

The investigation has revealed, at approximately 12:45 p.m., a 2016 Chrysler Town & Country minivan, operated by Wendy L. Murray, 44, from Cicero, was traveling northbound on River Road in the town of Lysander when she approached a pedestrian walking on the east shoulder of River Road. The pedestrian ran directly into the path of the van, police said.

William LeVea Denied Parole Again

The Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office announced this afternoon (Aug. 1) that the NYS Parole Board has again denied parole for William LeVea, who killed Christopher Spack in a violent DWI crash after chasing and ramming Spack’s truck many times on the evening of November 20, 2009. The family of Chris Spack are relieved that the board once again denied parole to this violent killer, Assistant District Attorney Diane Adsit said.

Mayor Barlow Announces Improvements To Oswego’s Public Pool

Mayor Billy Barlow announced today (Aug. 1) upcoming improvements to the city of Oswego’s swimming pool. Planned improvements include the addition of a stand-up mushroom sprayer and sprinkler to accommodate smaller children and will be handicap accessible. The city will also add a large sand box. Additionally, the city plans to enhance the appearance inside the facility and will add more tables and chairs for parents and pool attendees.

Plans Underway to Develop Municipal Sewer Service Between Fulton and Volney

The Oswego County Legislature continues moving forward with projects aimed at improving infrastructure and enhancing service to residents. The body voted to authorize applications for grant funding, and the intermunicipal agreements in support of them, to help with a project that will pave the way for the development of municipal sewer service between Volney and Fulton.

Oswego County Celebrates 160 Years of Agricultural Fairs

Staying true to the tradition of a family-oriented rural fair, the Agricultural Society of Oswego County, organizers of the 160th Oswego County Fair, have planned a full slate of activities from Aug. 9 through 13 at the Oswego County Fairgrounds, 291 Ellisburg St, Sandy Creek. Visitors can get the hang of driving a tractor on a virtual tractor ride, learn about antique farm equipment, hydroponics and enjoy a dairy treat in the agricultural building throughout the fair’s duration.

Hundreds March In Annual Children’s Parade

Hundred of youngsters, their friends and families, marched from Breitbeck Park to the Novelis Family Park (West Park) on Friday in idyllic weather. The annual Children’s Parade is considered by many to be the official start of Harborfest. The parade drew an unofficial throng estimated at more than 1,000 participants, from infants to adults.

Bipartisan Katko Measure To Preserve EPA Brownfield Program Advances

U.S. Rep. John Katko announced that bipartisan legislation he introduced to preserve the EPA Brownfields Program has moved forward in the House, overwhelmingly passing out of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. The Brownfields Reauthorization Act of 2017 would reauthorize the Brownfields program at the Environmental Protection Agency, helping communities in Central New York and nationwide revitalize neighborhoods and spur economic development through Brownfields reassessment and remediation.

Harborfest Kicks Off Its 30th Anniversary Party

Harborfest turned 30 on Thursday and it’s just as vibrant as the day it started. The festival was greeted by clouds and rain earlier in the day. But by evening, it was warm and partly cloudy as hundreds of people, young and old, were ready to celebrate in Breitbeck Park. The Family Stone got things off to a rocking good time. More great music and events is set the rest of the weekend.
