Oswego County Health Department Reports EEE Found in Mosquitoes in Constantia

The Oswego County Health Department announced today (Aug. 3) that Eastern equine encephalitis virus was detected in bird-biting mosquitoes collected last week near the Toad Harbor Swamp in the town of Constantia. Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang said the county health department is working closely with the New York State Department of Health to monitor EEE virus activity in Oswego County.

Homeland Security Releases Northern Border Threat Assessment Authorized By Katko Legislation

Today (Aug. 3), the U.S. Department of Homeland Security released its Northern Border Threat Assessment. The issuance of this report was the direct result of legislation introduced by U.S. Rep. John Katko that was signed into law last year, the Northern Border Security Review Act. Katko’s measure required the Department of Homeland Security to conduct a much-needed analysis of current and potential threats along our nation’s northern border.

State Police Update Fatal Crash in Lysander

Further investigation into this accident has revealed that on August 1, at approximately 12:35 p.m., the victim, 13-year-old Lucas Delong and his 12-year-old friend, left the Delong residence on River Road en route to the Northwest YMCA, which is also located on River Road, in very close proximity to the Delong residence. While walking southbound on the east shoulder of the road, Lucas noticed that his cat had followed them from his residence and was walking with them.Lucas picked the cat up and both boys turned around and began to walk north, to return the cat to the Delong residence.

Board, Public View New Office Renovation Work

The Oswego school board and audience members at Tuesday’s meeting were treated to a tour of the section of Leighton Elementary that will soon be home to the district offices. The northeast wing of the school is currently undergoing a renaissance from elementary classrooms to administrative offices and meeting space. “The main entrance will be on the north end of that wing,” Superintendent Dr. Dean Goewey said. “The main entrance faces Liberty Street.” The offices will be ready by the opening of the 2017-18 school year, he added optimistically.

State Police investigating car/pedestrian crash in Lysander

The investigation has revealed, at approximately 12:45 p.m., a 2016 Chrysler Town & Country minivan, operated by Wendy L. Murray, 44, from Cicero, was traveling northbound on River Road in the town of Lysander when she approached a pedestrian walking on the east shoulder of River Road. The pedestrian ran directly into the path of the van, police said.

William LeVea Denied Parole Again

The Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office announced this afternoon (Aug. 1) that the NYS Parole Board has again denied parole for William LeVea, who killed Christopher Spack in a violent DWI crash after chasing and ramming Spack’s truck many times on the evening of November 20, 2009. The family of Chris Spack are relieved that the board once again denied parole to this violent killer, Assistant District Attorney Diane Adsit said.

Mayor Barlow Announces Improvements To Oswego’s Public Pool

Mayor Billy Barlow announced today (Aug. 1) upcoming improvements to the city of Oswego’s swimming pool. Planned improvements include the addition of a stand-up mushroom sprayer and sprinkler to accommodate smaller children and will be handicap accessible. The city will also add a large sand box. Additionally, the city plans to enhance the appearance inside the facility and will add more tables and chairs for parents and pool attendees.
