David Cuevas Jr. is a senior at SUNY Oswego, majoring in Public Justice. In addition, he has two minors, Forensic Science and Health Sciences. Recently, he put his talents to work to improve the community and the environment. Over the summer, he said he’s “been lucky enough to have the opportunity to serve a term with AmeriCorps here in Oswego County.”
On August 21, people all across the United States will pause to gaze into the sky in hopes of catching a glimpse of the total eclipse of the sun. Day will briefly be turned to night. “A total eclipse of the sun will occur on Monday, August 21. It will be visible along an approximately 70-mile wide band from Oregon to South Carolina,” said John Zielinski of SUNY Oswego’s Physics Department. “Outside of this band, only a partial eclipse will be seen. In Oswego, only a partial eclipse will be seen. Proper eye protection must be used to directly view the eclipse.”
Mayor Billy Barlow announced today (August 10) there will be a grand re-opening of the Oswego Charles E. Gallagher Fort Swimming Pool at noon on Sunday, August 13, to celebrate the recent improvements and enhancements to the city-owned and operated public pool that the mayor announced earlier this month.
The Oswego County Health Department announced today (August 9) that West Nile virus was detected in a sample of bird-biting mosquitoes collected last week from the Toad Harbor Swamp in the town of West Monroe. The health department is working closely with the state Department of Health and will continue to monitor mosquito activity in Oswego County.
Exelon Generation’s Nine Mile Point Unit 2 reached full power at 11:37 a.m. today (August 9). Operators reconnected to the power grid on August 8, after addressing an equipment issue on the non-nuclear side of the plant. While the unit was offline, plant technicians completed repairs and testing to correct the equipment issue that caused the shutdown.
History buffs have a rare opportunity to learn about President Abraham Lincoln’s private secretary John George Nicolay Aug. 23, when Civil War historian and Oswego native Tom Ebert presents a free lecture at Fort Ontario State Historic Site. The program begins at 7 p.m. in the Enlisted Men’s Barracks at old Fort Ontario and is open to the public.
The National Math Foundation (a not-for-profit national charity) is hosting a Summer Institute teacher training and the Super Fun Math Youth Program through August 10 at Lake Ontario Event and Conference Center in Oswego, featuring the Math & Movement Program. The NMF announced Tuesday that the Oswego City School District is the first recipient of its Math Corps II Program Award. The program is for the entire 2017-18 school year in both Minetto and Charles E Riley elementary schools, the two largest elementary populations.
Mayor Billy Barlow today (Aug. 8) announced that Oswego city government has identified specific areas of damage in the Port City due to above average Lake Ontario water levels and flooding along the lake shore within city limits. Under an emergency work order, the city of Oswego hired Delta Engineers to conduct a preliminary survey of the damages caused by the high-water levels and intend to pursue funding to help repair the damage and mitigate against additional damage should high water levels continue to exist in the future.

At Monday night’s meeting of the Administrative Services Committee, councilors recommended a budget transfer to address the city’s skunk nuisance. The animal control officer requested a transfer of $8,000 to cover the cost of nuisance wildlife trapping services in the city for the 2017 trapping season provided by O’Gorman’s Wildlife Removal.
