Oswego Teen Facing Larceny Charges Following Several Overnight Thefts From Vehicles

State Police charged an 18-year-old Oswego man with nine counts of Petit Larceny following larcenies from vehicles in the towns of Oswego, Scriba and Palermo. On May 1, State Police in Fulton located and charged the teen with nine counts of Petit Larceny, a class “A” misdemeanor, following an investigation.

Series Of Volunteer Foster Homes Helps Animals

“They’re the kindest people around,” said Kelly Rainville, an Oswego resident. “If they can help an animal, they will.” The Oswego County Humane Society, a not-for-profit corporation located at 29 W. Seneca St. in Oswego, doesn’t operate like a normal animal shelter. Instead, the organization is a series of volunteer foster homes that care for an animal until they are adopted. Rainville has fostered animals through the Oswego County Humane Society since last August. She said she has had a good experience with the organization and thinks the foster system works.

Oswego Takes Steps To Prevent Opioid Overdose

“We’ve had, in the city of Oswego, a 300 percent rise in heroin and opioid admissions since 2010,” Mayor William Barlow said. “That tells us that factually there is a presence of drugs in our community and there is a problem with addiction.” A new program went into effect letting residents turn in their dangerous substances to the police while in return receiving medical intervention and treatment. According to Lt. Zach Misztal, one person has taken advantage of this program so far. “I have run into this individual one time since they have entered the program and was met with what appeared to be a sincere thank you,” he said. “So, as cliché as it sounds, if it helped one person, [it is] well worth it.”

School Board Candidates Questioned

Members of the public got to question the candidates for the Oswego Board of Education Tuesday night. The Oswego City School District Home and School Associations and the Oswego Classroom Teachers’ Association facilitated a “Meet the Candidates Night” at the OHS cafeteria following the budget hearing and the school board meeting. They were grilled on class sizes, taxes vs. quality educational programs, common core, charter schools and other issues.

Gov. Cuomo Declares State Of Emergency For Communities Impacted By Lake Ontario Flooding

Governor Cuomo today (May 2) declared a State of Emergency for the following counties in order to expedite repair to impacted structures and construction of shoreline stabilization projects: Cayuga, Jefferson, Monroe, Niagara, Orleans, Oswego, St. Lawrence, and Wayne. The Governor’s order empowers DEC and other state agencies to issue emergency individual permits for those larger-scale response actions that may be necessary.

Port City Eyes Law Requiring PFDs At River

At Monday’s Administrative Services Committee, Tom Reynolds, assistant city attorney, requested a discussion regarding a proposed local law requiring personal flotation devices. People in designated areas of the Oswego River would be required to wear personal flotation devices. Councilor John Gosek said it is something that has been in the works for a while.

Schumer: Federal Funding Bill Is A Major Win For Upstate NY

U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer today (May 1) announced major victories in the bipartisan federal funding bill that will greatly help Upstate New York. Schumer said these victories will boost the economy and support vital programs, including: funding for the Great Lake Restoration Initiative (GLRI), funding to confront the opioid epidemic, funding HOME/CDBG Program, critical railroad safety programs, support for education and higher-education and many more. Schumer provided statements for several major areas in which the budget will be a major boost for Upstate New Yorkers.
