Firefighters Battling Huge Blaze In Oswego Town
Several fire crews are battling a massive barn fire in the town of Oswego tonight (Jan. 2). The blaze was reported around 8 p.m. at the Dunsmoor Onion Farm on Route 104.
Several fire crews are battling a massive barn fire in the town of Oswego tonight (Jan. 2). The blaze was reported around 8 p.m. at the Dunsmoor Onion Farm on Route 104.
On January 1, at about 9:45 p.m., the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office and Scriba Volunteer Fire Department were called to a reported fire at May’s Polynesian Motel and Mini Mart located on State Route 104 in the town of Scriba. Once the fire was suppressed, an interior search located the body of the business owner, Steven May, 48, of the same address.
The Scriba Town Board voted Dec. 2 to approve a local law to abolish the position of elected town highway superintendent. The town supervisor would be empowered to appoint someone to the position, with confirmation of the town board. Central New York wins $500 million award. Also, Harborfest has a new leader and Oswego’s water, sewer fees hiked.

Entergy Corporation announced Nov. 2 that it will close the James A. FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant in Scriba, in late 2016 or early 2017. The company said its decision to close the plant is based on the continued deteriorating economics of the facility. Billy Barlow wins the mayor’s race. Also, the school district got a new superintendent. And, Oswego is home to its own 911 memorial.
At about 3:08 p.m. today (Dec. 31), members of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office were called to the northbound lane of I-81 in the town of Sandy Creek for a car/pedestrian fatal motor vehicle accident. Also on the scene were members of the New York State Police, NOCA and Sandy Creek Fire Department.
Federal, state and local lawmakers gathered with a large crowd of FitzPatrick employees, their families and other members of the Central New York community to show support of the aging nuclear power plant. Also, the Oswego school superintendent notified the board of his intentions of stepping down. And Super Dirt Week was headed to Oswego County.
Representatives of four Lake Ontario counties announced Sept. 4 that they were pursuing a nomination to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to nominate southeastern Lake Ontario as a National Marine Sanctuary. Also, Tony Pauldine starts work to save the Cahill Building, and EEE claims the life of a county man.

While it has circulated on social media that AAA offers a Holiday Safe Ride Program, a AAA representative confirmed that Western and Central New York, including Oswego County, do not participate in this program. However, there are many options in the Oswego and Fulton area to ensure you get to and from your New Year’s celebrations safely.
