A tree inventory is under way in the Port City. It is designed to find pests that are in urban forests because they come into urban forests first off and then they spread out and eat through everything. So it is important to detect them early, officials explained.

The NYSe Department of Environmental Conservation will hold a public meeting October 2 to discuss the draft Upper Salmon River Unit Management Plan and obtain comments and input from the public. Former Oswego City School District Superintendent Bill Crist will take over as superintendent of the Syracuse Diocesan schools early next spring. Crist retired from his post in Oswego at the end of the last shcool year. He will begin his duties for the Syracuse Diocese in March.
This funding, which will be used to help victims of domestic violence and sexual assault locate transitional housing services and secure permanent housing, is a component of the bipartisan Violence Against Women Act which Rep. Maffei co-sponsored and voted for in February 2013.

Mayor Tom Gillen has announced the launch of the 2013 Central New York Energy Challenge program. The challenge welcomes all citizens, neighborhoods, business groups and community organizations to form teams to set goals and reduce energy costs. Mayor Gillen has issued a challenge to Mayor Tobin of the city of Cortland to have some fun with the competition and rally more participation among Oswego’s citizens.
SUNY Oswego will host a community open house from noon to 7 p.m. Sept. 30, for its new Richard S. Shineman Center for Science, Engineering and Innovation and renewed Rice Creek Field Station. Kevin Hines attempted to take his own life by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge. “As soon as I jumped, I prayed to God that I’d survive,” Hines said. He survived and now travels the country helping raise awareness for many mental health and suicide awareness gatherings. Oswego, he said, was “fantastic” to host this weekend’s event.
