The city of Oswego Department of Public Works Water maintenance personnel will be performing preventative maintenance flushing of the water distribution system on the eastside of the city starting September 23. The affected area will be south of State Route 104E to East Utica Street and from East First Street to the eastern city limits, starting at East First and Bridge streets.
The United Way of Greater Oswego County began its annual campaign on Wednesday. Working together makes the United Way a success. Without ‘UNITY,’ there can be no commUNITY,’ the executive director said. The campaign’s goal is $800,000.
As a result of the Oswego City Police Department Anti- Crime Team’s (ACT) continued investigations into the illegal possession, sales and manufacturing of illegal drugs within the community the following arrests have been recently made:
The New York State Department of Health has notified the Oswego County Health Department that further evidence of the West Nile virus was found in two different mosquito pools that were submitted for testing on Friday, September 6. The Oswego County Health Department has postponed its plans to spray the Toad Harbor / Big Bay Swamp area today (Sept. 11). Weather permitting, aerial spraying will resume on Thursday, September 12.
Fort Ontario Superintendent Paul Lear will lead a battlefield walking tour of the War of 1812 Battle of Oswego at 2 p.m. Sept. 21. The tour will begin at the entrance of the old stone fort and is free and open to the public. Participants are advised to wear appropriate clothing and footwear.
William “Billy” Barlow Jr. (Republican) of 76 Erie St., has announced his candidacy for councilor of Oswego’s Fifth Ward. A fresh face to Oswego’s political scene, Barlow is no stranger to the city or the Fifth Ward. Representing the fourth generation of his family to live in the Fifth Ward, Barlow recently returned home from Arizona St. University.
Suicide is a national public health crisis. It is the second leading cause of death among 15- to 34-year-olds and the third leading cause of death for 35- to 44-year-olds. A local organization, SAVE – Suicide Awareness Voices of Education – is planing a couple of events in hopes of lowering those statistics and raising awareness. “Stride to Save Lives” will be held at the college on Sept. 21. On Sept. 20, Kevin Hines talk at First United Methodist Church of Fulton. The suicide survivor will also be the keynote speaker for the “Stride to Save Lives” community 5K Run/Walk.
Aerial spraying of a portion of the target area in central Oswego County was completed on Monday, September 9. The entire target area encompasses approximately 15,000 acres in portions of the towns of Mexico, New Haven, Palermo, Scriba and Volney. Weather permitting, the remainder will be finished tonight, Tuesday, September 10.
Admission is by donation. Parking is free. Founded eight years ago by Doreen Macklen, her husband Dale and son Jim, all of Boylston in northern Oswego County, the show has grown into a “heritage show and tell” of vintage farm machinery, crafts, music, and traditional agricultural activities from the rural North Country.
UPDATE: The Boil Water Advisory has been lifted as of 2 p.m. Tuesday Sept. 10.
