Consistent with this year’s theme, “Celebrate Oswego,” the Harborfest Children’s Park, sponsored by Novelis, features events by the many local businesses that support strong child development through entertainment and education. Novelis Family Park is located in Franklin Square on the west side of Oswego and will run from July 26 through 28.
Children’s events at Breitbeck Park will begin on July 23.

Usually, when Claudia Chetney steps onto the soccer field her objective is clear – do whatever it takes to help her team win. For the past several weeks, she has undertaken a variation of that mission. The Junior Girl Scout is ensuring that children with disabilities can play soccer for the fun of it – and not worry about winning or losing or even what the score might be. The program allows everyone the chance to learn the basics of soccer and enjoy the game without having to worry about their skill level.

The Oswego County Legislature has adopted summer hours for departments in the Legislative Office Building at 46 E. Bridge St., Oswego. Beginning July 1, and ending Aug. 30, offices will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Department of Motor Vehicles offices in Oswego, Fulton and Pulaski will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. during July and August.

Students from Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School, Central Square’s Paul V. Moore High School and Manlius Pebble Hill School were among competitors from around the globe taking home honors in the recently concluded third annual GENIUS Olympiad at SUNY Oswego.

The Oswego County Health Department announces June is Rabies Awareness Month in New York State. The staff is working with the NYS Department of Health to raise public awareness about the dangers of rabies.

The Third Ward Councilors said one way the city can increase its revenues and improve the quality of life at the same time is by vigorously cracking down on repeat code violator and collecting fines. It’s time to look “long and hard” at the way the city enforces its codes and possibly make some changes, Councilor Mike Todd said.

The circus is coming to town, thanks to a former Port City resident. David H Dice said he is giving the Oswego Railroad Museum the circus layout he built over the last few years. “I want people to in joy it. My grandchildren and there children and family can see it and say, ‘My Grandfather made this.’ I am so happy to be able to do this,” he said.

Setting goals and helping others achieve their goals is always rewarding. For former Morningstar Residential Health Care resident David Jones, reaching his goal was not just rewarding, it was life-changing.

“Take advantage of opportunity and believe that you can do things that others may not believe you can accomplish. Don’t allow negativity to influence a direction that you believe can be achieved. Be confident of yourself, continue to learn, and continue to strive to be the very best you can be every day. If you can dream it, you can do it. So, I say…Dream Big!” Superintendent Bill Crist told the Class of 2013.
